A CLARE artisan producer of utensils and kitchenware will feature on a popular RTE cookery programme tonight. The current series of How To Cook Well, with Rory O’Connell draws to a close tonight and will showcase the work of Éamonn O’Sullivan of Hewn in Ennistymon. Éamonn works with greenwoods, using traditional techniques and tools to create some of the most tactile kitchen utensils on the market. Hewn makes vibrant and characterful wooden utensils and kitchenware, and the Galway-based Michelin star restaurant Aniar serves up some of its dishes with Éamonn’s signature spoons. Four of the seven football leagues begin their campaigns on the first day possible of the government’s Covid-19 guidelines, with all divisions in both football and hurling limited to five matches which are based on last year’s fixtures. With no promotion or relegation at stake, the county leagues are primarily intended as a reintroduction to playing action following a minimum eight month absence. MEMORIES of bygone days in Ennistymon are among those celebrated in the Vanishing Ireland project, which is now seeking to hear from more of the county’s older citizens, writes Fiona McGarry. Vanishing Ireland is producing a podcast series with the help of legendary broadcaster, Anne Doyle and over 70s are being invited to share their memories and stories. Family members can get in touch with the project on their behalf with the deadline for submissions this Friday, June 4. In 2009, a print edition of Vanishing Ireland included the recollections of the late Patrick Joseph ‘PJ’ Davis from Ennistymon in a volume entitled Further Chronicles of a Disappearing World. In his interview, PJ, who was born in 1924, recalled how he was taught how to drive by his father Paddy in the early 1930s. With the arrival of commercial motorisation in Ireland, Paddy swapped the horse and cart for a one-ton lorry and became a full-time employee of the Griffin …

Council focus on helping tourism industry restart THE Púca of Ennistymon is likely to remain ‘on pause’ over the summer months, The Champion has learned. Following significant local opposition, plans to erect the two-metre sculpture on Lower Church Hill, were temporarily shelved earlier this month. In reply to a query from this newspaper, a spokesperson said, “It is likely that the status of this pause will be in place until at least the autumn because the priority at present is to support the local tourism industry with their reopening efforts, ahead of this summer season.” The local authority also confirmed receipt of a petition of opposition. An online petition under the heading of ‘The People of Ennistymon say NO to the Puca statue’, gathered 263 signatures before it closed on Friday last. Many signatories highlighted concerns over the lack of public consultation, and over the nature of the sculpture itself. One comment said: “The statue has no relevance to the …

WHILE plans for a landmark sculpture in Ennistymon have been paused, there has been no let-up in the debate over the proposed Púca. In recent days, celebrities, artists, historians, folklorists and an MEP have weighed in, in support of Aidan Harte’s proposals for a 2metre high half-man, half-horse on Lower Church Hill. Opposition to the bronze structure has also ramped up in recent days with an online petition under the heading of ‘The People of Ennistymon say NO to the Puca statue’. As of Wednesday lunchtime, it had gathered 244 signatures and is set to be forwarded to Clare County Council by the end of the week. Offers of alternative accommodation for the statue have come from all over Ireland, with folklorist Eddie Lenihan proposing that Crusheen might provide a suitable home. “It may not be the púca as portrayed in Irish folk tradition, but it is a fine piece of sculpture nonetheless,” he said. “Crusheen has grown enormously in …

A PROJECT aimed at ensuring the survival of a part of Ennistymon’s heritage has been granted funding. Ennistymon Tidy Towns plan to carry out a survey of the area’s remaining hand-forged gates with the aim of identifying which of these historic items can eventually be restored. Grant funding for the survey has been awarded to the local group under the recently announced Community Heritage Grant scheme 2021. Brendan P Lynch, chairperson Ennistymon Tidy Towns told The Champion, “This is a great recognition of the group’s involvement in the heritage of the area and in turn will form part of our heritage entry into the national Tidy Towns competition. The Ennistymon Vernacular Gates Survey will, he said, look at all remaining hand-forged gates in the town of Ennistymon and surrounding hinterland and record these to the standard of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). “This survey will then be used to identify a select number of gates to be conserved …

A CLARE student has taken second prize in the Intermediate Category at the National Final of this year’s Student Enterprise Programme. Mae Kivlehan, from Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon, was awarded for ‘Tried & Tested, which was a cookbook with a compilation of recipes from sports stars, celebrities and locals. The winning student worked under the guidance of her teachers, Laura Garvey and Caitriona Hynes. The finals of the Local Enterprise Office initiative were broadcast virtually on Friday from Croke Park with An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Ambassador Derval O’Rourke speaking with host RTE’s Rick O’Shea, as students and teachers watched on from across the country. The Junior Category was represented by The Art Co from Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon and the Senior Category was represented by Portable Pouches from St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Spanish Point. SHORTLY after 10am this morning, uniform Gardaí in Ennistymon, assisted by the Garda Dog Unit, Armed Support Unit, the Divisional Drugs Unit, Customs Revenue Officers and Social Welfare Inspectors, executed a number of search warrants in the Ennistymon area. During the course of the operation Gardaí seized €40,000 of suspected cannabis herb and a sum of cash believed to be in the region of €20,000. Gardaí also seized two suspected imitation firearms, slash hooks, knives, hatchets and a baton. Two men, aged in their 20s and 50s, were arrested and are currently detained at Kilrush Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. The suspected drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.
