Referendum Commission encourage voters to check register

The Referendum Commission has launched a nationwide campaign to encourage people to make sure they are registered to vote on the forthcoming referendum on the regulation of divorce. As part of that campaign it is encouraging people in Clare to check the register.  The referendum is taking place on Friday May 24, the same day as the European Parliament and Local Government Elections. The Referendum Commission will over the coming weeks be running TV, radio, online and social media advertising to urge people to check if they are registered at checktheregister.ie.  While the Commission’s remit covers the referendum only, being on the electoral register will allow you to vote in the referendum and the European and local elections. Voters urged to register by November 25

FIANNA Fáil General Election candidate, Rita McInerney, has urged all Clare residents to check that they are on the Electoral Register, and if not, to register to vote by November 25. Ms McInerney made the call as the new draft electoral register for the county was published. “It is vitally important that everyone checks, and double-checks, that they are on the Electoral Register. You can do this very simply by visiting www.checktheregister.ie and searching for your details. You can also check if you are on the register at your local post office, Garda station, library or Clare County Council office,” the Doonbeg woman said. “The right to vote is one of the privileges of living in a free and democratic republic. Increase in Clare electoral register

WHILE the final figures will not be available until the earliest next week, Clare County Council has reported an increase of approximately 1,500 people in the electoral register, as the May 25 referendum on the Eighth Amendment approaches. The deadline to register was Tuesday. The full, but as of yet approximate, register currently stands at 81,377 for the county.
