Tipperary 2-18 Clare 0-11 Following a comprehensive defeat at the Ragg in Tipperary in their third round All-Ireland senior camogie championship game on Saturday, Clare now find themselves in the position that they must beat Derry on this Saturday and, in the process, score four goals if they are to get into the quarter finals. A win over Derry will leave Clare level on points with Dublin. When Clare and Dublin met two weeks ago they drew, so if they are level on points, according to competition rules, they will be separated by the number of goals scored during the league section of the competition. To date Dublin have scored four goals while Clare have managed just one, hence the need to score  four goals and, of course, beat Derry, on Saturday next in a game that will be played at a Clare venue. Outstanding in U.L’s victory in the Fitzgibbon cup final replay in mid week, the Ballyea and his Fitzgibbon cup captain David McInerney maintained that form when inspiring Clare to a merited win over Dublin in round four of the league It was a win that didn’t appear likely when the home side was reduced to fourteen men just before half time when Brendan Bugler was sent off following an off the ball incident. Students from seven Clare schools will exhibit 22 projects in the 2015 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition at the RDS, Dublin in January. Leading the way, with 10 entries, is Mary Immaculate Secondary School, Lisdoonvarna, followed by Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon and Meanscoil na mBráithre, Ennistymon, with three each; St John Bosco Community College, Kildysart and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir, Ennis, with two each, and Rice College, Ennis and Kilrush Community College with one each. Among the Galway schools an interest in the Young Scientist competition are Seamount College in Kinvara, with one project, and Portumna Community College, with three. At the 51st annual event from January 7 to 10, there are over 120 awards to be won, including the prestigious BT Young Scientist & Technologist of the Year. Aer Lingus Regional, operated by Stobart Air, announced this Wednesday the addition of over 2,000 seats to Scotland to facilitate golf fans for the Ryder Cup in September. The airline has added 15 extra flights to Edinburgh from Shannon, Cork and  Dublin for Ryder Cup week, September 22 to 29. Shannon-based passengers can avail of an extra seven return flights which amounts to an extra 1,008 seats, double the normal capacity. The airline has seen a huge demand from US-based passengers. Over a thousand passengers flying into Dublin are connecting to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen on the week of the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup takes place at Gleneagles, Scotland on Friday, September 26  and will conclude on Sunday, 28. The Gleneagles Golf Resort is about a 55 minute drive from Edinburgh Airport.

The total number of vacant commercial premises in Clare has increased from 11.2% in Q1 2013 to 12.2% in Q1 2014, according to the latest data published by GeoDirectory this Monday. For the first time, the report includes an analysis of the commercial vacancy rates of a selection of Ireland’s main shopping centres and high streets in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kilkenny and Limerick. In Clare, 863 of the 7,062 commercial addresses recorded in Q1 2014 were vacant. This is a commercial vacancy rate of 12.2%.  This figure relates to premises in Ennis and all over the count. According to the latest edition of GeoView which is published quarterly, there are 223,336 commercial address points across the country, of which, 27,791 were classified as vacant. The national commercial vacancy rate in Q1 2014 is unchanged from the 12.4% reported in Q4 2013. THE National Girls and Youth Championships will get under way in the National Stadium, Dublin on this Friday and will round off the boxing season for all aspiring combatants. There will be six entries from Clare in the draw, which will follow the weigh-in and medical on Friday morning. Boxing will get under way at 1.30pm, continuing on Saturday afternoon, with the finals scheduled for Friday week. Top of the contenders from Clare, which includes three each from the Kilfenora and Ennis clubs, will be reigning Irish champion Rebecca Windall, who successfully defended her provincial title last month and has moved up to her new 70kg category with relative ease. The Ennis Rice College student is highly rated and fancied to come through for her second title, but will find Ulster champion, Chloe Moore, a formidable opponent should they meet. IT has been decided that an expert panel should be established to carry out an urgent investigation of how a final resolution of the industrial relations issues relating to the Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme (IASS) can be secured. This follows consultation by the secretary general of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Tom O’Mahony, and the secretary general of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, John Murphy, with both the chief executive of Ibec, Danny McCoy, and the general secretary of Congress, David Begg, Ibec and Congress have each nominated an industrial relations expert to lead the investigation, with the support of a financial expert, to comprise the Panel. The Panel members are: Mr Brendan McGinty and Ms Laura Gallagher (KPMG), and Mr Peter McLoone and Mr Eugene McMahon (Mazars). Nicola Corless THE  launch of the Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,500km touring route from Donegal to West Cork which aims to attract more visitors to the West Coast takes place place in Dublin this Thursday. Despite the route showcasing the Atlantic coast, the launch will take place at the Fáilte Ireland headquarters in Dublin City Centre. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring told The Clare Champion holding it Dublin was the fault of the national media, something echoed by organisers Fáilte Ireland. “It is a scandal,” he claimed. “That is the trouble with the national media, it is Dublin orientated and that is one of the reasons we have to have it in Dublin.” He also noted that holding the launch in the capital would not guarantee publicity.
