A DIGITAL hub, cafe and 46 residential units are planned as part of a proposed transformation of an historic area of Ennis, which the developers say will offer “an opportunity to bring a new vibrancy to this community”. Eko Integrated Services Ltd have lodged an application for the ‘Buttermarket Development’ at the Drumbiggle Road, Buttermarket Street and Simm’s Lane. The site is in an Architectural Conservation Area of Ennis. The former Buttermarket building, a protected structure dating from 1862 is located on the opposite side of Simm’s Lane, and according to the developer’s the name ‘Buttermarket Development’ has been chosen “in recognition of the area’s heritage and connection to the former Buttermarket”. In more recent times a flats complex was located on the site which has been demolished. THE County Show went ahead last Sunday in superb weather conditions, with bright sunshine and very high temperatures. Clashing with the Munster hurling final hit the crowd to a certain extent, but it was still a very successful day according to chairman Joe Lillis. “The crowd was smaller than usual but we had great horse classes, plenty of jumpers, the cattle were back naturally because of the weather. We had a good few trade stands in it. We actually had a large fleet of donkeys in there.” He added, “The hurling took a good bit from it. Also the weather, a lot of people wouldn’t show cattle in that weather. The cattle just don’t perform, you could take a 100 weight off a beast travelling two hours in a box on a day like that. “The cattle were down, but the showing horses were up. A bat talk and outdoor walk hosted by Bat Conservation Ireland and supported by Clare County Council will take place in Ennis this Thursday from 8pm to 10pm. The event forms part of efforts by John Curtin of Bat Conservation Ireland to recruit volunteers for BATLAS 2020. The group is resurveying the entire island of Ireland 10 years on from BATLAS 2010 to record the changing distribution of Ireland’s common bat species. Persons with previous experience surveying bats are particularly invited to attend Thursday evening’s event at the Civic Room, Drumbiggle, Ennis. New traffic arrangements will be put into effect from tomorrow (Tuesday) to facilitate the final phase of works on the Ennis Market Rejuvenation Project. Construction work is progressing on schedule and will deliver a new covered building for market traders in Ennis town centre by the end of July. Clare County Council says the traffic arrangements are aimed at maximising vehicular access to the market area whilst works are ongoing. From Tuesday, access to and from the Market area will be enabled via Summerhill and Lower Drumbiggle Road, while access will be restricted from the Market area junction with Lower Drumbiggle Road to the junction with Barrack Street (local access only). Signage detailing temporary changes to vehicular access to the Market will be in place while personnel will be present at the junction of O’Connell Street and Barrack Street to assist with traffic management. Work on the Garraunakilla Market Regeneration Project in Ennis will lead to the closure of both Market Street and Market Place from Monday next for a 12-week period. The closure of both roads from Barrack Street to Market Place, including Drumbiggle Road junction, is to facilitate the construction of new roads and footpaths, including diversion of overhead services and the provision of new sewers. Municipal District engineer, Eamon O’Dea said that as a result of the road closure, Summerhill will be temporarily open to two-way traffic, with parking restrictions on Summerhill. Mr O’Dea outlined that access to Summerhill, Market Place, Lower Market Street, Cabey’s Lane and Lower Parnell Street will be via Summerhill, with exit through Cabey’s Lane and Summerhill. He said existing signs and road markings on Summerhill would be removed and adjusted during the temporary road closure.
