Two people were rescued from Lough Derg yesterday afternoon following a suspected engine fire on board their cruiser. Lough Derg RNLI, based in Dromineer, went to the incident shortly after 2pm following reports that a fire had broken out as the cruiser was travelling from Ballina up the lake. The lifeboat located the 31ft cruiser at anchor off Hare Island, off the County Clare shore. The passengers were safe and unharmed. The skipper had cut his engine and dropped anchor when he noticed black smoke billowing from the engine. When the lifeboat arrived on scene, the engine was no longer issuing smoke and the situation had settled. With an RNLI crew member on board, the cruiser was taken under tow to the public harbour at Dromineer. Low water levels on Lough Derg led to a 34ft cruiser with four people on board running aground yesterday afternoon by the Scilly Islands, off the Ogonnelloe shore. At 1.39pm, the Lough derg RNLI lifeboat launched with helm Ger Egan, Lian Knight and Delia Ho on board.  The lifeboat located the vessel at the junction of Scariff Bay and Parker’s Point at 1.54pm. The four people on board were safe and unharmed and wearing their lifejackets. Once the lifeboat crew were satisfied the vessel was not holed, it was taken off the rocks and into safe water. The cruiser continued its onward journey once drives and rudder were found to be undamaged and in good working order. Members of Killaloe Coast Guard Unit responded to two call outs on Saturday night – one to a man who suffered a suspected heart attack and the second to a cruiser which ran aground on Lough Derg. The man was airlifted to hospital after he suffered cardiac arrest on board a boat at Banagher. The Killaloe unit was alerted and responded as did the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115. Ambulance paramedics and gardaí also went to the scene where the boat had moored at Banagher. The man was removed by the helicopter crew and flown to Galway University Hospital. While returning to their base at Killaloe, the unit was directed to a second emergency call. A 40-foot cruise boat with five people on board had run aground south of the Silly Island on Lough Derg. TWO people were rescued after their 40ft cruiser was left drifting having been damaged on rocks near Crow Island, south of the Scilly Islands on Lough Derg. The Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat was alerted at around 3.50pm on Wednesday evening and two fishing boats had also gone to assist the damaged boat and help prevent the cruiser going aground on rocks. The lifeboat reached the vessel at 4.15pm and a crew member was transferred to the cruiser to set up a tow. The lifeboat towed the boat, with her two crew and an RNLI volunteer on board, to Killaloe where it was safely tied up. RNLI Lifeboat Helm Eleanor Hooker cautioned, “All boat users should remember the importance of remaining within the safe channels marked on their lake charts.”
