Below-par Flannan’s footballers bow out of Corn Uí Mhuirí

Eoin Brennan watched as St Flannan’s bowed out of the Corn Uí Mhuiri at the quarter-final stage at the hands of St Francis Rochestown on a score of 1-10 to 1-4   ST Flannan’s College’s provincial senior adventure ended on a frustrating note when held at arm’s length by St Francis Rochestown in Mallow on Wednesday afternoon. Chasing the contest for the entire hour, the Ennis college never reached the heights of previous displays but certainly weren’t helped in their task by an inadequate refereeing display that simply wasn’t good enough at this stage of such a prestigious competition. Whether the Mallow official was an eleventh hour replacement or not, he was unable to keep up with the play and increasing lost control of proceedings as the hour elapsed, eventually dismissing a player from each side. It still may not have fully flipped the narrative for a below-par Flannan’s who took 20 minutes to open their account amidst seven first …

St Flannan’s learn Corn Uí Mhuirí QF opponents

St. Flannan’s will face Cork’s St Francis College Rochestown in the Corn Uí Mhuirí (Munster U19A Senior Football Championship) quarter finals. The Ennis outfit finished second in their group as Clonakilty CC upset the odds to beat Tralee CBS in their final group game on Tuesday. This meant that the three aforementioned sides all finished level on points with Clonakilty CC enjoying a score difference of +17, St. Flannans finished +6 while Tralee CBS +2 tally was not enough to avoid elimination. Clonakilty’s huge opening round win over Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore (Kerry) was ultimately what helped them claim top spot but after a disappointing opening round defeat, St. Flannan’s will be glad to have progressed through to the last eight. The Ennis side lost their opening round game to Tralee CBS, 1-9 to 0-10. St. Flannan’s came up against an inspired goalkeeping display from Sean Collins as an early major from former Kerry minor Colm Browne gave his side …

Supersub Doherty fires Flannan’s into last eight of Corn Uí Mhuirí

Derek Dormer was on hand to watch St Flannan’s College defeat Clonakilty Community College 3-8 to 0-11   A 2-1 final quarter blitz from supersub James Doherty ensured that St Flannan’s College cemented their place in the last eight of the prestigious Munster Senior A Post-Primary Schools Football Championship in Ballyagran, Limerick on Wednesday afternoon. Requiring nothing less than a victory to keep their Corn Uí Mhuirí hopes alive, the Ennis school had to show immense character to produce a ten point second half turnaround. Therefore, regardless of what happens in the final round between Tralee CBS and Clonakilty, St Flannan’s are assured of one of the quarter-final places from the group. Substitute Doherty was the hero scoring 2-1 after his introduction in the 45th minute. In fact Doherty’s very first touch came only 20 seconds after his introduction when he picked up possession 25 metres out before unleashing an unstoppable rocket into the top corner. Doherty’s second major was …

Eoin Brennan watched as St Flannan’s College got their Corn Uí Mhuiri campaign back on track with a 4-10 to 2-14 defeat of Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore (Kerry) SAINT Flannan’s College are back in contention for a place in the last eight of the prestigious Corn Uí Mhuiri after finally getting off the mark at the second attempt in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale on Wednesday afternoon. Agonisingly edged out by Tralee CBS in their opening bout four weeks previously, nothing but a victory was sufficient to stay alive in the competition and they duly responded by leading from start to finish to knock opponents Rathmore out. Four goals in a 15 minute period through outstanding targetman Luca Cleary (2), Fionn Cotter and James Hegarty in the middle third of the contest helped St Flannan’s to ease ten clear by the turn of the final quarter. It should have been enough to finish the tie as a contest but credit …
