A HUB for all kinds of community activities is on the cards for Montpelier-O’Briensbridge, with major efforts afoot to raise funds to redevelop the old school building. The building has been at the centre of the community since 1898. It served as a primary school until the 1960s and later as an extension to the parish oratory. However, in recent years, it has fallen into some disrepair. A new committee has recently formed to redevelop the building into a modern facility centre for the Montpelier-O’Briensbridge community.“We hope that the old school will become a centre of community life once more,” said Committee Chairperson, Paul Slattery. “We want to honour the great work that has been done before us and use this space to bring people together again.” It is envisaged that the centre will support social activities for the young and old. THE wealth of musical talent of the young people of the Miltown Malbay area is set to be showcased to audiences around the world in a new web series to be released from this week. The series, which was the brainchild of the Miltown Malbay Development Committee (MMDC) and was filmed by Neil Hynes, the manager of the state-of-the-art €1.4m community centre in the West Clare town, features some of those who have taken the tradition into the 21st century. The initiative was prompted after the pandemic forced the cancellation of this year’s Willie Clancy Summer School. Mr Hynes explained, “Realising the streets wouldn’t be heaving this July with musicians and tourists from all over the world, we felt that it may be easy for the public to assume that the spirit of the area had been sucked out of it, that it was no longer there. No Willie Clancy, no Miltown Malbay. Nothing could be further from the truth.” …

FIFTY-EIGHT sport facilities and projects across Clare will receive funding of almost €1.5m under the Sport Capital Programme. A total of 20 GAA and camogie clubs have been allocated funding, including Kilmurry Ibrickane GAA (€85,000), Smith O’Brien’s GAA (€79,000), Clarecastle GAA (€73,000), Sixmilebridge GAA (€71,000), Kilmaley GAA (€64,000), Clondegad GAA (€59,500), Clonlara GAA (€54,000), Éire Óg (€53,000), Inagh-Kilnamona GAA (€50,000), Ballyea GAA (€46,000), Bodyke GAA (€33,500), Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA (€31,500), Clooney-Quin GAA (€26,500), Ruan GAA (€21,500) and Killenana GAA (€21,000). The Clarecastle funding is towards the provision of female dressing rooms. Other significant funding includes €85,000 for Kilmurry-Ibrickane Community Centre Committee Ltd; €42,500 for Bridge United AFC; €26,500 for Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board; €26,000 for Ennistymon Parish Project Community Centre Ltd and €21,500 for Lough Derg FC. While a number of camogie clubs received funding, it was significantly less than what most GAA clubs were granted.
