THE people of Cloughleigh have come together to raise an impressive €3,000 for the Irish Red Cross’ work in Ukraine through the hosting of a number of events. A fundraising tea party, raffle and contribution from the local benevolent fund all played their part in raising the money which was recently presented to Aiden Lonergan of the Irish Red Cross. Flan Brennan, chairman of the Cloughleigh Residents Association explains that when news began to emerge of the war in Ukraine and they saw what was happening they were driven to try and help in some way. “At the beginning of this we were starting to hear on the news about the troubles in Ukraine and we felt we had to do something as a community. We wanted to give them a bit of support so we thought a fundraiser for the Irish Red Cross, who are doing great work, would be a good idea.” The fundraisers involved a number of …

RESIDENTS living in the Cloughleigh area of Ennis are calling for action to address an increasing amount of traffic and speeding in the locality. Their concerns were highlighted at a recent meeting of the Ennis Municipal District where Councillor Mark Nestor sought the replacement of an existing speed ramp and for the erection of additional ‘slow down’ and ‘children at play’ road signage at Gordon Drive. The councillor outlined that a number of residents have made representations highlighting their worries about the amount of cars speeding on the road. He also pointed out that the popular astro-turf facility on the road is resulting in even more traffic coming into the area. Barry Conway, A/Senior Executive Engineer, told the meeting the Ennis Municipal District will carry out a road safety assessment in Gordan Drive giving consideration to all signage, speed ramps and line marking. “Any necessary repairs will be included in this years SMDW,” he added. THE latest lessons at Scoil Chríost Rí in Ennis have been causing quite a splash among its students. Last week saw 90 primary school students take part in a pilot programme introducing them to kayaking. This is just the first step of a project which is hoped to result in establishment of an Outdoor Adventure Hub at the riverside school which will benefit the entire town. Kayak le Chéile was formed earlier this year by primary school teachers, Jó Mag Fhearadhaigh and Conor Healy, with a view to establishing a club in Ennis which would facilitate access to the River Fergus for water sports. The new club began its ambitious programme with a Level 1 training course for staff members with an interest in kayaking. Nevsail Watersports provided tuition and the course was attended by representatives from Gaelscoil Mhichíl Ciosóg, Clare Youth Services, Scoil Chríost Rí and the local community.  With the support of Clare Sports Partnership, a pilot programme …

  A SERIOUS incident in Ennis on Tuesday afternoon led to a 39-year-old- man appearing in court this Friday charged with the murder of a local man, Eoin Boylan.   At Ennis District Court, Nassar Ahmed of The Mews, Kilrush Road, Ennis appeared after being charged with the murder of mature student, Eoin Boylan, aged 32, at Gordon Drive, Cloughleigh, Ennis on April 14.   Mr Boylan was rushed to hospital after an incident at Gordon Drive on Tuesday afternoon, but died en route.   Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Detective Garda Noelle Bergin told the court that she arrested Mr Ahmed for the purpose of charge at 23.45 at Ennis Garda Station on Wednesday night.   The garda told the court that Mr Ahmed replied ‘Okay’ after being charged with the murder offence.   After reading the charge, Judge Mary Larkin told the court “this is a serious matter”. ON a bright and beautiful Tuesday afternoon the life of Ennis man Eoin Boylan was ended in some of the grimmest circumstances imaginable, as he died as a result of stab wounds, following an incident in Cloughleigh. The death of Eoin, who was in his early 30s, followed an altercation outside a house on Gordon Drive and the area was closed to the public for some time after the incident, which happened around 3pm. It was a bright and sunny day and it is understood that there were witnesses to the incident. The emergency services were summoned to the scene and Mr Boylan was put into an ambulance, where he passed away. His body was subsequently brought to Limerick for an autopsy to be performed by the State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster. THE man who died as the result of a stabbing in the Gordon Drive of Cloughleigh this afternoon has still not been named but Gardai say he was in his early thirties. People in Cloughleigh this evening said that he was from Ennis, although this has not been confirmed by Gardai. Gardaí were called to a serious assault at around 3pm. The injured man was placed in the ambulance, which is where he passed away. His body was removed to the Mortuary in University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem will take place tomorrow morning, Wednesday, April 15 by the State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster. The scene is currently preserved and being technically examined at this time. A man (late 30s) was later arrested and he is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station under Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Gardaí are appealing to any persons who were in the area of Cloughleigh Estate/Gordon Drive, Ennis this afternoon between 2.30p.m. …

THE death of a man in Ennis following a stabbing this afternoon is under investigation. Just after 5pm this evening part of Childers Road in Clougleigh was closed off, while a large amount of people were milling around on the footpaths nearby. This evening a Garda spokesman confirmed that the death of a man is now under investigation.

ALMOST one thousand lights shone out of the darkness at an Ennis church on Wednesday evening, each one a beacon of hope that we will come through the current Covid-19 crisis. Cloughleigh Church was lit up with hundreds of candles in a special ceremony which was recorded and will be broadcast on Fr Ger Fitzgerald’s Facebook page. A number of people living in Cloughleigh also played their part by placing their own lights in the windows of their homes. According to Fr Ger he has been “overwhelmed” with the response to the Light up the Dark idea, and he hopes the broadcast will “bring a moment of peace to people.” “The idea for the Light up the Dark came, first of all, from the general sense of unease, uncertainty and anxiety that is around at the moment because of COVID-19.
