Clare junior football team named

THE Clare junior football team to play Waterford at 5pm on Saturday in Ennis was named on Friday night by manager Joe Garry. Gary Leahy (Wolfe Tones) will captain the team for the provincial quarter-final in Cusack Park. 70 ‘Drunk Driving’ Arrests in Clare this Year

Eleven people were arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving in County Clare over the June Bank Holiday weekend, bringing the total number of people to have been arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving in Clare since January to 70 people. Speaking about the level of drunk-driving in the county, Clare’s Chief Superintendent, John Kerin said the 11 arrests over the June Bank Holiday weekend represent an increase of 17%, or 10 arrests, for the crime on last year. “One might say 10 isn’t an awful lot but there are still 70 people now arrested in Clare in the first five months for drunken driving. It was 60 this time last year and 11 people driving over the legal limit in a week in a county like Clare is significant and it’s worrying,” he said. 83% Reduction in Clare Road Deaths since 2007

ROAD deaths in Clare have seen an 83% reduction since 2007. This places Clare in the top five counties in terms of the reduction in road deaths. The first year-on-year increase in the number of fatalities since 2005 came in 2013 and has been revealed in a recently published report by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The publication looks at the number of road deaths in each county in Ireland, from 2007 to 2013, which placed County Clare in the top five safest counties, with the fewest number of fatalities. The report, entitled 2007 To 2013 Road Traffic Deaths by User Type and County, highlights the reductions in road fatalities in Clare between 2007 and 2013. However, while this statistic is a step in the right direction, tragically, since 2007, 23 drivers, three motorcyclists, two cyclists and eight pedestrians have been killed on roads in the county. Road deaths in Clare fall by 83%

The number of road traffic deaths in Clare have dropped dramatically by 83% over a seven-year period, according to a new report. Roads deaths in Clare have been falling steadily since 12 people lost their lives in 2007. However, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) report also reveals  23 drivers, three motorcyclists, two cyclists and eight pedestrians have been killed on roads in the county since 2007. In 2013, Clare also ranked in top five safest counties with the fewest number of fatalities. The report, “2007 to 2013 road traffic deaths by user type and county”, highlights the reductions in road fatalities in Clare between 2007 and 2013. It shows there were seven road deaths in 2008 and 2009, four in 2010 and two in 2012 and 2013. Cassidy’s Pharmacy Targetted in Smash and Grab

Gardaí are on the hunt for two men who broke into Cassidy’s Pharmacy in Ennis in the early hours of Tuesday morning after what has been described by gardai as a “smash and grab” incident. The premises, which is located on O’Connell Street , was targeted at approximately 2am by two men who “using a sledgehammer bashed in the door” of the well known pharmacy. It took the culprits approximately three minutes to break the glass to gain entry and clear shelves of cosmetics products before they were gone again. A senior garda said this was an unusual type of crime in that it was so “daring”, and described it as a “smash and grab” incident as it took so little time to execute. Gardaí believe high value cosmetics were the primary target as these were the only items stolen in the burglary.  The theft was over in a matter of minutes as the items were cleared from shelves onto …

McNamara calls for Labour front bench to go

CLARE TD Michael McNamara has launched a scathing attack on his party’s front bench saying that  all but one of them need to go as soon as possible. While the rivalry between Eamon Gilmore and Joan Burton has been simmering for at least three years now, he feels that neither of them should hold the leadership of the party. Speaking to The Champion tonight, he said that it’s time for a huge clear out. “If we remain in Government I think there’s a case to be made for Brendan Howlin given his portfolio but for the rest, everyone’s time comes, mine will come too.” He says that Labour must heed the election results and not dismiss them as part of a normal electoral cycle. “We have to listen to the people and it’s not just a mid term thing, there’s a lot of disillusionment about promises that were broken. ” While he acknowledged that Labour would probably have suffered from …
