Clare Traveller Pride Awards to be held in Ennis

TRAVELLER and comedian Martin Beanz Warde will be the star MC of the Clare Traveller Pride Award in Ennis. The event has been organised and is hosted by a brand new organisation, Clare Traveller Community Development Project (CDP).   Admission is free for the evening of live entertainment and Traveller awards at Cois na hAbhna on the Gort Road at 7pm on Thursday, July 21, with food and refreshments provided. Clare Traveller CDP co-ordinator Bridgie Casey said, “The aim of the awards is to highlight and recognise the achievements and contributions of Travellers in their communities and in Irish society. Funding success for Traveller support initiative

A JOINT application to set up a Traveller support initiative has been successful, Clare Local Development Company (CLDC) has announced. The collaborative application on behalf of CLDC, Clare Women’s Network, Clare Public Participation Network (PPN) and the HSE’s Mid-West Traveller Health Unit has been endorsed by several other community and voluntary organisations around the county. The monies will now be provided by Department of Rural and Community Development’s Pilot Project Community Development Fund. More than 120 projects around the country applied for this funding and the Clare collaborative group are delighted to have been one of only seven successful applications to the one million euro fund. Doirin Graham, CEO of Clare Local Development Company welcomed the news saying that this much needed funding would secure a Traveller specific initiative. “We want to ensure that Travellers are involved at every level of this project and are front and centre in the decision making roles,” she said. “With our organisations’ support we …

Feminism festival goes virtual on Human Rights Day

WOMEN will be urged to “unmute” themselves on International Human Rights Day on December 10, with the first of a serious of webinars from Clare Women’s Network. The network is to move its popular Festival of FeminismS, Silence + Voice event online in response to restrictions around the pandemic. Organisers have said they hope to engage the public and ignite conversations to create an inclusive feminist movement in Ireland. The event, which will run from 2.30-5.30pm next Thursday, will see influential feminists from across Ireland, speaking up and speaking out about their lived experiences, personally and professionally. “Clare Women’s Network are excited to launch this series on International Human Rights Day, which is also the last day of the International 16 Day campaign to raise awareness of Gender Based Violence, a very significant day and a hugely important campaign for women universally,” said Elaine D’Alton, Project Coordinator of the Clare Women’s Network. “The panel will discuss issues pertaining to feminism …

Clare Womens’ Network calls for easing of maternity care restrictions

Dan Danaher and Fiona McGarry RESTRICTIONS on hospital access for the partners of pregnant women are continuing to cause concern, and have prompted a campaign being lead in Clare by the local Women’s Network. The organisation said it has received contact from a number of people affected by restrictions introduced in response to the pandemic. One woman who contacted the network was critical of the fact that people are not being prevented from attending house parties, while partners and husbands are banned from attending appointments. “I have had to go to my appointments alone,” the woman, who chose to remain anonymous, said. “I am always fearful that I could get bad news or something might happen and I have no one with me whose job is just to support me. It’s not fair that people can gather in houses and meet in pubs but I have to go through my entire pregnancy without anyone. It’s an awful burden to have …

Clare to receive funding for LGBTI+ services

CLARE has been selected as one of eight counties in the country to receive funding for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI+) services under the Dormant Accounts Fund. In November 2019, Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development, published the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2020 providing funding to address disadvantage across the country. This includes the provision of €200k to support LGBTI+ community organisations. County Clare was selected as one of eight organisations nationwide and has been awarded €35,000 from the Dormant Accounts Fund. The funding is based on proposals received from organisations around the county who are seeking to complete projects which ensure that existing community infrastructure is inclusive and welcoming to LGBTI+ people. Following a countywide call for expressions of interest, 10 organisations across the county will benefit from the funding, including: Clare Women’s Network, Clare Haven, Clare Youth Service, North West Clare Family Resource Centre, Ennis Musical Society, Fishbowl Youth, Burren Art Gallery, …

Ennis conference to address domestic violence

THE Clare Women’s Network, together with Safe Ireland, will are hosting an  important one-day conference on domestic violence in Ennis on Friday (December 14). The event, ‘Understand and Responding to Coercive Control’ showcases leading experts in the field of domestic violence and law. Keynote speakers include expert on coercive control, Professor Evan Stark. Professor Stark in his award winning research illustrates the terrifying techniques men use to control their partners, strategies that Stark argues are more effective in trapping women in relationships than physical violence. Other speakers include Davina James-Hanman an independent Violence Against Women Consultant. Davina has worked in the field of violence against women for over three decades in a variety of capacities. The final presenter will be Caroline Counihan BL. Caroline has worked with Safe Ireland since 2014.
