Second body pulled from water in County Clare this Saturday

THE BODY of a man believed to have fallen in to the river in Newmarket On Fergus last night has been located this afternoon. The news comes after the body of man missing for the past 16 days was taken from the water today in Ennis at 1.30pm. The body of the second man was located shortly after 2pm in a river that flows through the village. Further details of the circumstances of his death are as yet unknown The body was recovered from the water shortly after 2.00pm and removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem will be carried out later. A Garda spokesman confirmed: “A body was removed from the water at Newmarket on Fergus in Co. Clare earlier today.”

Body pulled from river in Clare following 16-day search

A body has been recovered from a river in Co Clare during a search for a missing man. The remains are believed to be those of a man who was seen entering the River Fergus in Ennis over a fortnight ago. The discovery was made at around 1.30pm soon after Clare Civil Defence personnel recommenced their daily search for the missing man. The body was found in the water about a kilometre downstream from where the man was last seen. The alarm was initially raised late on the evening of November 10 when a man was observed entering the water in Ennis. A significant multi-agency search and rescue operation was quickly mounted however when there was no sign of the man by 2.30am, emergency services for stood down for the night. M18 in Clare closed after van goes on fire while in motion

The M18 motorway has been closed southbound between junction 14 Barefield and junction 13 Tulla Road while emergency services deal with a vehicle fire. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis and Shannon stations are dealing with the incident. Gardaí are also at the scene. A van is understood to have burst into flames while travelling towards Ennis shortly after 11am. The driver of vehicle managed to pull into the hard shoulder and jump out of his van to safety. The southbound lanes of the motorway have been closed while the northbound carriageway is not affected. Fire crews have brought the fire under control and it’s expected that one lane could be reopened to traffic once the incident has been dealt with. The remainder of the southbound carriageway will be reopened once the vehicle has been removed from the scene.

Search continues for man who entered river in Ennis

THE search is continuing for a man reported to have entered the River Fergus in Ennis on Thursday night. Divers from Ennis, Burren, Kilkee and Lough Derg Sub Aqua Clubs along with clubs from Limerick joined Clare Civil Defence volunteers in the search at the weekend. The garda sub aqua unit joined the search and recovery operation yesterday afternoon. The alarm was raised at around 11pm on Thursday when a man was seen entering the water in Ennis’ town centre. This sparked a multi-agency operation involving members of the gardaí, Clare County Fire and Rescue Service, the National Ambulance Service; Clare Civil Defence, Doolin Coast Guard unit and the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115.

Search to resume this morning for man who entered Fergus river

A search is due to resume this morning for a person reported to have entered the River Fergus in Ennis late last night. The alarm was raised shortly after 11pm when Gardaí observed a male at a bridge in the town centre. It’s understood the man entered the river and that Gardaí deployed life-buoys in an effort to rescue him. Despite the best efforts of Gardaí, the man was quickly taken downstream in the strong current. The River Fergus is currently quite high and fast moving following recent heavy rain in the county. A major multi-agency search and rescue operation was quickly mounted. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station were mobilised including specially trained swift water rescue technicians (SRTs). The National Ambulance Service also dispatched paramedics and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit. Red alert as Clare firefighters set for industrial action

SEVERE disruption to the Clare Fire and Rescue Service looks likely after a union served its intention to conduct a ballot for industrial action on behalf of local fire fighters on October 26. This vital life-saving service may be curtailed unless Clare County Council can address the “recruitment and retention crisis” affecting the local Retained Fire Service. The union has served the council a two-week written notice of its intention to ballot their members in the Retained Fire Service for industrial and strike action, which started on October 12. It also confirmed the union remains available to “seek an agreed solution to this dispute”. In a letter to Chief Executive, Pat Dowling dated October 12, SIPTU stated as a result of the failure “and/or refusal of management represented by the LGMA to honour its commitment to make proposals to address the long standing issues giving rise to the recruitment and retention crisis affecting the Retained Fire Service in the county …

Fire crews called to major blaze at Clare construction yard

Fire crews from two Clare stations have dealt with a major blaze at a construction yard in the county. The alarm was raised shortly before 3pm when the Munster Regional Communications Centre received a report of a fire near Knock, Kilmaley. A fire is understood to have broken out in a building used to service vehicles operated by a local construction company. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station initially responded to the incident along with Gardaí. Additional fire service resources were mobilised from Ennistymon station. Water tankers from both stations and a hydraulic platform from Ennis were also dispatched to the scene. The tankers were used to ferry water from an off-site source to the scene. Firefighters tackled the fire from above using the hydraulic platform and sprayed the building with water and foam in an effort to bring the fire under control. Injured hiker winched off Burren mountain and airlifted to UHG

A man had to be airlifted to hospital after he suffered an injury while hiking in North Clare. The alarm was raised shortly after 2pm on Sunday afternoon when emergency services received a report that a person had fallen in The Burren. The incident occurred on Blackhead Mountain in the extreme northwest of the county. The National Ambulance Service, Irish Coast Guard and Gardaí were alerted and responded the area. The Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter was also tasked to the scene. At the time, Rescue 115 was involved in a missing person search in the Woodford area of Galway but was retasked to Blackhead, reaching the scene in about 10 minutes. Because of the terrain in the area however, the helicopter was unable to land. Instead, the helicopter winchman/paramedic was lowered onto the mountainside. Doolin Coast Guard volunteers lay down a canister of orange smoke to indicate the location of the casualty and wind direction for the helicopter crew. …
