A man alleged to have carried out an unprovoked attack on his 74-year-old neighbour in Barefield earlier this month has been unable to take up bail, a court has heard. Ciaran Cullinan (32), with an address at Curraderra, Barefield, appeared at Ennis district court this Wednesday, via video link from Limerick Prison. Cullinan is charged with assault causing harm to Noel Meere at Curraderra, Barefield on September 3. He is further charged with possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis for the purposes of sale or supply. Those charges arise from a garda search of Cullinan’s address in Curraderra, Barefield, also on September 3. Cullinan was granted bail at Ennis district court earlier this month subject to a number of conditions. At the time, Judge Patricia Cronin granted Cullinan bail on his own bond of €500 with €250 to be lodged in court. The court is also seeking an independent surety of €2000, with €1000 to be lodged in court. …

A judge has barred a man charged with stealing €35,063 worth of electronic goods on two occasions from the same business on Ennis’s O’Connell Street from entering Clare. At a sitting of Ennis District Court, Judge Marie Keane imposed the county ban on equestrian worker, Ion Bărbulescu as part of his bail conditions. Judge Keane remanded Mr Bărbulescu with an address at Citi Hostel on Dublin’s Gardiner Street in custody with consent to bail and ordered that he can only take up bail if he can provide an independent surety to lodge €2,000 in cash to court. Gardai opposed bail for Mr Bărbulescu and in evidence Det Garda Declan Keavey said that Mr Bărbulescu is charged with the theft of mobile phones, Apple AirPods, watches and other electronic goods to the value of €20,890 the property of CEX Entertainment, O’Connell Street on April 16 on the Easter weekend this year. A 50-year-old north Clare man convicted of the possession of an unlawfully captured high-value 12lb wild salmon has told a court “I don’t eat salmon”. At Kilrush District Court, James Mullane also admitted to Judge Mary Larkin that having the bludgeoned-to-death salmon in the boot of his car beside the Inagh River on the evening of May 20 2021 “does look bad, I know”. The father of two denied killing or injuring the 80cm long female salmon and said when taking the salmon from the river it was already “stone dead”. Mr Mullane of Monanagh, Ennistymon, said that he wanted to take the dead salmon home in order to take photos of it to highlight the impact a hydro turbine was having on the local salmon population. A 32-year-old west Clare man “destroyed” the family home in a row with his mother over the purchase of dog food, a court has heard. At Ennis District Court, Sergeant Louis Moloney said that the man sent his mother a text message on Monday of the week in question concerning the family dog. In response, the mother said, “This is how it all came about. He wanted me to get food for the dog because I was gone for two weeks. “Because I didn’t come with the dog food and I didn’t have his messages, it made him angry.” Sergeant Moloney said that the man told his mother by text “your dog will suffer now”. In response, the mother said: “He says things like that all the time. He loves the dog.” The man had sent his mother a previous text stating “All I want is dog food.” In the case, the man is charged with the criminal damage to …

A 71-year old west Clare man has pleaded guilty to the assault causing harm of a brother-in-law in a dispute concerning an animal. At Ennis Circuit Court this Monday, Flan McNamara pleaded guilty to the assault causing harm of Tom Casey on June 3 2020 contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act at Carrowreagh West, Cranny, Kilrush. Mr McNamara of Carrowreagh West, Cranny, Kilrush also faced a separate charge of producing an ash-plant capable on inflicting serious injury during the course of a dispute at Carrowreagh West, Cranny, Kilrush on the same date contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act. Counsel for the State, Lorcan Connolly BL told the court that the plea to the assault causing harm charge is acceptable and that a nolle prosequi would be entered concerning the second charge as the State was not proceeding with the charge. ALL the money that a care home worker stole from an 83-year-old care home resident went on household bills and debts. That is according to solicitor, Darragh Hassett who told Killaloe District Court that there was “no element of flashiness” in the spend by Lorraine Hennessy of the €3,011 that she stole from Terrence Stevenson. Mr Hassett said that Ms Hennessy has now repaid all the €3,011 that was stolen from Mr Stevenson. In the case, Ms Hennessy (40) of Glor na Srutha, Clonlara has pleaded guilty to 22 theft charges concerning €3,011 between August 20 and October 5 2020 from Mr Stevenson. In court, Judge Mary Larkin said that there had “been a breach of trust” by Ms Hennessy of Mr Stevenson. A CLARE man accused of murdering a man in Lisdoonvarna has been returned for trial to the central criminal court. At Ennis district court this Wednesday, a book of evidence was served on Thomas Lorigan (32). Lorigan, of no fixed abode, is charged with the murder of pensioner John O’Neill at St Brendan’s Road, Lisdoonvarna, on dates inclusive between January 6 and January 7. The charge against Lorigan is contrary to Common Law. Lorigan appeared in person at court, his previous appearances having been via video link from Limerick prison where he has been in custody on remand. Garda Stephen Murray gave evidence of serving a copy of the book of evidence. Sergeant Aiden Lonergan told the court that on receipt of directions from the director of public prosecutions (DPP), he was applying to have the case returned to the present sittings of the central criminal court. A judge has warned the parents of two ‘school shy’ children that she will send both to jail unless their children have a 100 per cent attendance record in school from now on. In one case, a 15-year-old girl has not attended school at all in the current school year while her 11-year-old brother has missed 80 out of 117 school days. At Kilrush District Court, Judge Mary Larkin was told that the girl’s mother informed a TUSLA Education Welfare Officer that her daughter wasn’t attending school because ‘she didn’t like it’ and suffers from ‘anxiety’. The TUSLA Education Welfare Officer said that the 11-year-old boy wasn’t attending school because of ‘headaches’ and that he was being bullied at school but she stated that there was no evidence to support the bullying claim.
