Clare 1-13 Tipperary 2-6 Hospital in County Limerick hosted the Munster Minor A Camogie Championship final on Wednesday evening, when Clare and Tipperary clashed at this stage for the second year in-a-row. At the end of an excellent contest, Clare were deserving winners and confirmed the widely held view that there is a bright future for the Banner County at adult level. Despite being hit for an early goal, Clare never panicked and when the half-time whistle sounded, they were eight points clear, 1-9 to 1-1. Tipperary again struck for a goal early in the second half and when Premier County officials reflect on this tie, they will wonder why Cashel’s Caoimhe Purdue was not in their line-up from the outset. Orlaith Duggan was not expecting it when she was approached and asked to be the Clare senior camogie captain. “It’s a great honour to captain any team and a very big honour to captain one’s county senior side. I was, of course, delighted to be considered but it was something that I wasn’t expecting,” the 22-year-old told The Clare Champion last week, as she took a break from training ahead of the opening game of the All-Ireland championship against Ofally. Born into a well-known Clooney-Quin family, Orlaith readily acknowledges, “It’s a really sporting house and my family are delighted for me. They are really supportive”. THE Clare Camogie Board lost out on Leader funding worth €181,776.49 in 2013 after a fraudulent AIB bank statement, attached to the application, was submitted by a former chairperson of the board. Orla Considine, 37, from Dangan, Tulla appeared before Ennis District Court this week where she pleaded guilty to charges of making and using a false document. At the end of the hearing, Judge Patrick Durcan struck out the charges. The charges state that on or about June 7, 2013 she made and subsequently used a document purporting to be a genuine bank statement issued by AIB with the intention that it be used to induce a person to accept it as genuine. The application was made to secure funding for the development of Fr McNamara Park, on the site of the former Doora landfill, on the Quin Road, Ennis.   Members of the Clare camogie team from 1974 gather for a re-union at the Old Ground hotel this Friday night. Forty years ago they defeated Dublin in the All-Ireland junior final at Croke Park to win Clare’s first All-Ireland camogie title. There were just a couple of camogie clubs in the county at the time, with Éire Óg and Shannon the main two. Some members of the team played their club camogie in Dublin and Cork. Ballynacally’s Margaret O’Toole who played for Éire Óg, was the Clare captain and the team was managed/coached by Éire Óg’s Michael Brennan. Teams were twelve a side with a goalkeeper, a full back, three half backs, three midfielders, three half forwards and one in the full forward line. Two members of the Clare team, Claire Harrington and Maureen Davoran, played with the Celtic club in Dublin, while Mary Mahon played with Muskerry in Cork. Team member Kitty McNicholas went on to serve in a …

LIKE their hurlers, Kilkenny camogie teams have dominated the inter-county scene over the years. In the past decade, however, they have had to watch as Cork, Wexford and, last year, Galway held the upperhand in the championship. They were never very far away though and in the past year or two, Kilkenny have been close to regaining the top spot. They contested the All-Ireland final last year with a relatively young and skillful side and they have followed up on that progress by reaching Sunday’s league final without dropping a point. Clare have also made a lot of progress, winning honours at U-16 and minor level. Two years ago, they won the Munster senior title but, so far, they have struggled in the championship. This season, the Banner outfit has improved with every outing and are deserving of their place in Sunday’s final, the first time that a team from the county will contest this decider. Clare 2-11 Limerick 0-3 FOR the second-year-in-a row, Clare will play Cork in the semi-final of the National Senior Camogie League. The game is scheduled for Saturday, April 26. Clare sealed their place in the semi-final with this comfortable win over Limerick at Clonlara on Wednesday. This was the second game in a three-way play-off between Clare, Limerick and Galway, whom Clare beat last week in Corofin. Clare took control from the outset and a first half goal from Ellen Horgan helped Clare to a half-time lead of six points, 1-4 to 0-1. Orlaith Duggan raced through early in the second half for the winner’s second goal, which had Clare in the driving seat and well on the way to the semi-final, long before the final whistle sounded.
