Last year’s camogie finalists favourites to tee up rematch

Eoin Brennan previews the senior camogie championship semi-finals taking place this Saturday Truagh-Clonlara v Kilmaley at Fr. McNamara Park Doora, Saturday 2pm (Kevin Walsh, Wolfe Tones) All eyes were on Truagh-Clonlara this year to see how they would respond to the heartbreak of a first senior final reverse. With the McMahon Cup almost in their grasp, the South East Clare side were remarkably reeled in by Scariff-Ogonnelloe at the death last November before being lowered in the replay a fortnight later. It could have had a detrimental effect but if anything, Truagh-Clonlara have come back stronger as they defiantly look to get over the line this time around. Off the back of their validation group decider victory over Inagh-Kilnamona, this could be a potential stumbling block as with expectations firmly on reaching another final, Truagh simply cannot overlook the challenge that’s in front of them. After all, in similar circumstances two years previously, Kilmaley almost brought down eventual champions Inagh-Kilnamona …

Clare focused on result with All-Ireland final prize in sight

Derek Dormer speaks with Clare’s joint coaches and joint captains ahead of their All-Ireland junior camogie semi-final against Antrim tomorrow afternoon Clare have been here before at this penultimate stage of the competition, 60 plus minutes away from the Final. On Saturday they will face into their third semi-final in a row so does that change the approach in any way? The management team of Conor Dolan and John Carmody feel that semi-finals are all about winning no matter what, it’s just about getting over the line. (Conor Dolan): “It’s the worst game ever to lose in any sport, losing a semi-final is horrible, you’re sixty minutes away from Croke Park and the occasion of an All-Ireland Final with all the fanfare that goes with it. Lose the semi-final and all you’ll have is regrets but win and you’ll be playing in the Mecca of hurling and have memories that will last a lifetime’ (John Carmody): “For me the way …

GALLERY: Clare women secure senior camogie status in some style

CLARE 6-10 OFFALY 1-13 Clare easily secured Senior status for 2023 with a clinical devastating performance full of skill guile and no little determination. A first half that showed everything that is good about this Clare team, first to every ball, ravenous in the tackle, recycling possession to optimum effect and showing a killer instinct to boot. Two goals inside the opening few minutes was the start managers Conor Dolan and John Carmody would have only dreamed of. Eimear Kelly assisting the first with a lovely handpass to Chloe Morey who blasted home before Kelly scored a goal of immense quality. Picking up possession 30 yards from goal with a beautiful first touch she beat her marker on the outside before cutting in and batting to the bottom corner in Shane O’Donnell style. A long range attempt at a point by Chloe Morey deceived Offaly Keeper Eleanor Clendennnan dropping into the net and by the end of the opening quarter …

Prayers of the faithful ahead of Clare’s relegation clash

How exactly Clare find themselves in the unenviable situation of a relegation play-off considering their provincial championship promise that got them within a whisker of a Munster Senior title is a head-scratcher for another day. After all, as anyone that has spiralled into any relegation play-off can testify to, it doesn’t matter what happened before or how big your reputation is, it’s all about getting a result by whatever means possible. You see, on paper Clare should have too much for an Offaly side that have really struggled this season. Susan Earner’s squad began with four successive National League Division 1 reverses to Tipperary, Dublin, Down and Galway by an average of 14 points and their fortunes didn’t improve for the championship as a 17 point opening round pummelling at the hands of newcomers Antrim in their own home patch set the tone for a forgettable campaign. Losing former All-Star Michaela Morkan to retirement before a ball was pucked certainly …

Rebel game a bonus shot for Clare with others to come

It seems a little too soon to revisit such an epic Munster Final showdown a fortnight ago but perhaps the reparation process can be accelerated by another bout between Clare and Cork on Saturday. Being Clare’s fifth weekend of championship action in-a-row, an already war-weary Banner side had to use all their experience and nous to take what could be yet prove a valuable share of the spoils against Tipperary last Saturday. However, a lack of freshness against the Rebels is a much more daunting task as Cork’s perennial challenge for All-Ireland honours has built up a much more experience and deeper senior squad than most to be able to contend with their own hectic schedule. It means that despite an unflinching determination and unquestionable spirit, it’s all about how Clare approach their latest trip to Cork as with Aoife Power, Alannah Ryan and Orlaith Duggan fully back in the mix along with a free weekend for the juniors, it …

Crunch derby a litmus test of Clare camogie’s progress

Eoin Brennan previews Clare’s National Camogie League Division 1 Round 3 clash away to Limerick in TUS Gaelic Grounds this afternoon ULTIMATELY, John Carmody and Conor Dolan’s aim is to bridge the gap to the big three of Galway, Cork and Kilkenny. However, Clare’s real litmus test of where they currently lie comes this Saturday when facing neighbours Limerick in their own home patch. Moral victories with a young side against Cork and Kilkenny were decent indicators of developmental improvement but it’s how Clare fare against the best of the rest such as Limerick, Dublin, Waterford and Tipperary that will be seen as the essential battleground. Being a derby should be motivation enough but add in last year’s humbling reverses to their Shannonside neighbours that first put Clare into a Division 1 relegation play-off with Dublin before Limerick also subsequently knocked the same opponents out of the Munster Championship and it’s essentially must-win for the Banner. Being effectively a relegation …

Cats use up one of their nine lives following Banner backlash

Eoin Brennan reports from the National Camogie League Division 1 Round 2 match in Cusack Park Kilkenny 1-8 Clare 0-10 IT had to take an injury-time point from Kallyann Doyle to finally edge Kilkenny over the line and agonisingly deny Clare a dramatic share of the spoils in Cusack Park this afternoon. Sunk by a brace of late Cork goals seven days previously at the same venue, this time it was the hosts who appeared to be finishing the stronger after a three point unanswered rally regained full parity by the hour mark. It wouldn’t be a full reprieve though as from the puck-out, Kilkenny patiently worked the ball down to roaming centre-back Doyle to squeeze her shot just inside the right post for the winning score. A draw would have been just reward for another hard-working display in difficult conditions, with newcomers Lorna McNamara and Caoimhe Carmody in particular excelling on the heightened stage against the 2020 All-Ireland senior …
