The decision by Aer Lingus to suspend Shannon Airport’s only year round route to Boston over the Easter holiday period has been deplored by Clare TD Timmy Dooley. He said that the service cutback will have a negative impact on the hospitality sector across the West of Ireland. Deputy Dooley made the comments after Aer Lingus confirmed the linkwould be temporarily suspended due to operational reasons. Deputy Dooley said,“The announcement by Aer Lingus that it is cutting its only year round route to Boston during the Easter holiday period is alarming. DUE to industrial action by Aer Lingus cabin crew, 12 flights to and from Shannon today (Friday) have been cancelled. These were to New York, Boston, Heathrow and Faro and all customers were offered the option of rescheduling their flights or obtaining a refund. While an invitation to talks was issued to Impact (the union representing the cabin crew) this week, spokesman Niall Shanahan said, on Wednesday, it had come too late to prevent disruption. “For certain, the strike will go ahead on Friday. The situation we’re in is that we don’t know when the talks are going to take place, we don’t know what’s on the agenda, other than the company has indicated they want to talk about the rosters issue. THE commencement of the new Aer Lingus daily service between Logan and Shannon airports will be key to supporting strong business and tourism synergies between the two regions, according to the Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh. After meeting a Shannon Airport delegation led by Chairman Rose Hynes, the Mayor Walsh said that the new daily service reflects the economic ties today and deep historical links between the regions. Mayor Walsh parents emigrated to Boston from Carna and Ros Muc, County Galway in the 1950s and intends to make a return visit during the summer. “No one needs any introduction to the historical influence of the Irish on this part of America but there is also a very strong economic connection today between here and the West and South coasts of Ireland, which Shannon Airport serves,” he said.
