Newly ordained Bishop Nash extols the virtues of listening and talking to shape church community in years ahead THE newly-ordained Bishop of Ferns, Ger Nash has pledged to lead a diocese in seeing, reflecting and acting to ensure it becomes a refuge of healing and encouragement. Clare Bishop of Ferns says he is in favour of women priests

THE new Bishop-Elect of Ferns, Ger Nash, supports a greater role for women in the Catholic Church including their ordination as priests. This isn’t allowed under current church rules and the lack of women priests has been a bone of contention for many people in the Killaloe Diocese for decades. In an interview with The Clare Champion, the former Tulla priest who is “privileged” and “humbled” with his elevation, has also called for an examination of the real meaning of ministry and the role played by non clerics spreading the message of Christ during the daily lives. Asked if he believes women should be allowed to become priests, Bishop Nash said the full ministry in the church should be open to all baptised people. “When is that going to happen I don’t know. Clare priest ‘privileged’ to become new Bishop-elect of Ferns

A TULLA priest is “privileged” and “humbled” to become the new Bishop-elect of Ferns to replace Bishop Brennan following his retirement. In bis first address as Bishop of Ferns, Ger Nash said he is privileged to be be chosen by Pope Francis to lead this historic Diocese. The former Killaloe Diocese part-time secretary thanked His Excellency, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, the Papal Nuncio to Ireland, for leading the celebration of the Eucharist, as well as his kind support and detailed preparations for this announcement. In 2010, Fr Nash moved to Crusheen and six years later, took on the role of pastoral development director. His links to Ferns Diocese is principally through the Ferns students who were classmates in Maynooth. Father John Carroll, Diocesan Secretary, has been a source of both welcome and help over the past week to Bishop Nash and whose deep knowledge of the Diocese he know he will draw on frequently during the coming years.
