GALLERY: Clare people turn out in large numbers to honour Ashling

LARGE crowds gathered in Ennis this afternoon for a vigil organised by Clare Women’s Network to honour the memory of the late Ashling Murphy. The Square in Ennis was filled with people holding candles and pictures of the 23-year-old school teacher who was murdered in Tullamore this week. Further vigils will follow all around the county this evening at Clarecastle 7:30pm; Ennistymon Square 5:30pm; Ruan Pitch 7pm; Corofin GAA Pitch 6:30pm; Kilrush at 7pm in the Square; Lissycasey’s main pitch at 7pm; Kilmaley National School running track at 7pm and at the Town Park, Shannon 6:30pm with more planned tomorrow. On Saturday there is a walk/run at Tim Smythe Park, Ennis with candle-lit vigil at 5pm. There is a vigil at the Bandstand in Kilkee at 4pm, a bog walk beginning at the School Road side, Kilkishen at 6pm and a vigil in Newmarket on Fergus meeting in O’Regan Park at 4pm

Clare vigils to be held in honour of late Ashling

THERE will be a number of vigils held in county Clare today and tomorrow to honour the memory of the late Ashling Murphy. The murder of the 23-year-old school teacher in Tullamore has shocked and angered the nation and thrown the focus once more on male violence towards women. Clare Champion MD John Galvin said, “We are all horrified at what happened to Ashling Murphy and we need to do something as a community to show our abhorrence of violence in all its forms.” In Ennis, on Saturday afternoon at 4pm there will be a walk/run at the Fair Green with candles to be lit at 5pm. Also tomorrow, there will be a vigil in Newmarket-on-Fergus at 4pm in O’Regan Park. At the same time in Kilkee, there will be a vigil at the Band Stand.
