Suzanne helps Ireland win bronze medal

Suzanne Corcoran, incoming president of Portumna Golf Club for the centenary year, 2013, represented Ireland as part of the All-Ireland seniors team that won a bronze medal in Switzerland two weeks ago.

 

In the men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Portumna at the weekend, the winner was Tony Harte (19) with 42 points from  Mike Glynn (9) with 41 points, Dean Cox (13) 40 points and Eoin Phelan Rathdowney Golf Club (9) with 39 points.

The gross was won by JP McLoughlin (Scr) with 34 points. In the ladies’ 18 hole v par competition the winner was Beth Parnell (27) from Marie Kelly (36), with third spot filled by Eileen Purcell (24).

There will be an open gent’s and ladies’ singles on Sunday, October 7. This is a fund-raiser for the Ladies Miele team, who have qualified for the All-Ireland semi-final v Clonmel in Westmanstown on Saturday, October 13.

Spanish Point

Spanish Point won the  annual challenge with Ringenane Golf Club from Cork for the Hillery/Lynch Shield last Saturday at Spanish Point.

The competition was played in mixed matchplay format. The visitors were the holders of the trophy. Club captains Noel McMahon and Nuala Kilroy accepted the trophy on behalf of the Clare club.
This weekend, the final golfer of the year competition will be staged at the club.

Ennis

Ennis seniors held a team-of-three competition on Thursday last when the winners with 49 points were Seamus D’Arcy, Eamon Murphy and Michael Dempsey. They won by three from Dick Herbert, Joe Dilleen and Tom Pender. In third spot on 45 points were Johnny Stack, Pat Rutherford and Tom Pilkington followed by John Keane, Tim Kelly and Jim Hennessy on 45, Paddy Cahill, Cyril Brennan and Jim Felle on 45. In sixth spot were Joe O’Brien, Jimmy Kearns and Michael Nunan, also on 45. Sixty-nine people played in the competition.

In the memorial day outing on Sunday, Pat Whelan was the winner with 40 points from Michael Kenny on 38 and John R Ryan on a similar score. Valerie Hassett won the ladies’ section with 35 points.

Shannon

In the open seniors singles at Shannon last week, Jim Corr was the winner with 45 points from Leo McPhillips on 42, Danny Finnegan on 40, Nicky Hawes on 40 and Mick Wall, also on 40.

In the men’s fourball at the weekend, the winners were Eugene Logan and Louis Upton with 48 points from

Tom McMahon and Liam Hogan on 45, with third spot filled by Brendan Fitzgerald and Hugh Heaney on 43.
Sunday’s 18-hole singles was won by Darren Keane with 45 points from Colm O’Flynn on 42, Jim O’Grady on 42 and Noel O’Sullivan on 41.  Damian Casey won the gross with 37.

Lahinch

The Matterson Cup, a men’s singles Stableford competition, was played for at Lahinch on Saturday when the winner was John Skerritt junior (9) with 41 points from Michael Lynch (13) with 40 points, Bernard O’Brien (18) with 39 points and Tim Hurley (15) with 37 points. Declan McInerney won the gross with 37 points.

The winner of Sunday’s men’s singles Stableford competition on the championship course was Paul O’Brien (5) with 39 points from John Reynolds (11) with 36 and Gerry McGrath (23) with 35 points. Declan McInerney won the gross with 33 points.

Woodstock

Alan Barrett  (11) was the winner of the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend with 43 points from Anthony Sweeney (3), who had 41 points.

In the Woodstock Cup, all matches must be completed by this Sunday.

In the ladies’ Christmas hampers competition, the winner was Mary Sadlier with 35 points from Áine Burke on 34, Áine Donegan on 32 and Joan Barrett on 32. The ladies’ monthly medal will be played for this Sunday, with the draw taking place at 12.15pm.

Kilrush

In the seniors’ outing at Kilrush last Wednesday, the winners were D Eastman, Tom O’Dea and Noel Enright from PJ Maher, Noel Cooney and Maurice Roche, with third spot filled by John Robinson, Seamus O’Donnell, Brendan McNamara and Paddy Carmody.

The ladies’ singles on Thursday last was won by Geraldine Burke (20)     with 39 points     from Mary McCarthy (26) with 37, Mary Young with 37 and Agnes Shannon (22) with 34.

The Friday mixed was won by Pat Shannon, Freda Moran and Ursula Lineen from Declan O’Donovan, Agnes Shannon and Muriel Kiely with third spot filled by Tom Coffey, Kieran Lillis and Kathleen O’Brien.

In the inaugural ESB Cup men’s open singles on Sunday the winner was Michael Coghlan with 37 points from Pat Brennan, with a similar score. Finbarr McMahon was third on 36 points followed by Declan Conway on 36.
The winter league will commence during October and the entry sheet is on the noticeboard.

This Sunday there will be an 18-hole men’s singles Stableford competition, with a timesheet in operation.

Dromoland

In the men’s weekend competition at Dromoland the winner was Seamus McEnery with five up from Ryan O’Neill on three up and Michael Flannery on two up. John O’Shaughnessy won the category for those with handicaps of 18 and over while the junior winner was Brian Meaney with one up.

There will be a singles Stableford competition this weekend.

Gort

The winner of the men’s singles stroke competition at Gort at the weekend, a golfer of the year event, was David Kennedy (18) with 65 from Ciarán Coughlan (13) with 66, Andy Murphy (20) with 69 and Robin Lahiffe (15) with 70. The gross was won by Eamonn Morrissey (5) with 75.

In the weekly open singles, David McAllen (18) won with 39 points.

There will be a men’s 18-hole singles this weekend while the open singles will continue on Monday.
Last week’s ladies singles for the Rockfield Cup was won by Helen McCormick (20) with 37 points from Josie Cummins (20) with 35 points and Siobhán Forde (11) with 34 points.

There will be a ladies’ foursomes competition this week. 

East Clare

In the men’s club championship at East Clare last week, the winners were Eric McNamara (4) with 71 in category 0-5, Liam Husband (7) with 70 nett in category 6-11, John Stack (17) with 40 points in category 12-17 and Sean Jones (18) with 40 points in category 18 and over.

In the ladies’ masters the winner was Sheena Mannion with 66 nett from Catherine Minogue with 68 and Kathleen O’Brien with 70.

The winner of the 18-hole singles was Connie McKenna.In the ladies’ seniors outing, the winners were Bess Fennessy, Hannah Guinnane and Phil Burke from Pauline Nugent, Ann Culloo and Sue Casey, with third spot filled by Georgina Wright, Connie McKenna and Mary Stritch.

East Clare have qualified for the Munster final of the Belvedere Cup, having defeated Dromoland last week in the Clare qualifier. They now go to Tipperary next Saturday for the Munster final. There will be a men’s and ladies’ 18-hole singles Stableford competition this weekend.

School scramble

A very successful golf scramble was held in East Clare last week in aid of Feakle National School. Over 20 teams competed. Michelle O’Loughlin, principal Feakle National School, and Phil Canny, chairperson of the board of management, presented the prizes to the winners at Bohan’s Bar.

The winners were Brian McMahon, Sean Torpey and Enda Donnellan with a score of nine under par and 58.2 net. In second place were Michael and Denis Rochford and Michael Hogan with a score of nine under par and 58.6 net. They were followed by Dermot O’Donoghue, Jason Horan and Michael McMahon with a score of seven under par and 60.0 net. In fourth spot were John Punch, Anthony Meaney and Paul Howard with a score of six under par and 60.0 net.The nearest-the-pin prizes were won by Tim McGillicuddy (Friday) and Jason Horan (Saturday).

Killaloe classic

The Killaloe SRS (soccer, rugby, scouting) fundraising golf classic took place last Friday and Saturday in East Clare. Ideal golfing weather made it a great day out for the teams involved.

The winners were the Russell Blinds team of Alberrt Shanahan, John Hayes, John C Hayes and Mike Reddington with a score of 17 under gross for 50.4 nett. Forty teams took part in the competition.  The prize was an all-expenses-paid golfing holiday to Spain for the four team members. Brendan Foley, Killaloe, a member of the East Clare club, narrowly missed out on the prize for a hole in one.

Pitch and putt

Michael Kerin was the winner of the strokeplay competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. Paddy Sheedy was the runner-up while Marty Fawl won the gross.

The Helen Cuddihy Memorial Trophy will be played for this Sunday, with the tee available from 10am.
