Successful Marie Keating walk

THE Marie Keating Foundation 5km walk was held for the third year in Shannon and will result in more than €5,000 being raised for the charity.

The event was organised by the Charlie Tully Celtic Supporters Club and while there were concerns many would head to Clare’s beaches on what was a boiling hot day, the people of Shannon turned up in their hundreds.

Organisers estimate that more than 340 took part, with many of them bringing their young children in prams and strollers, while a few brought their dogs along.

The start of the walk was signalled by the release of 215 helium-filled balloons and many wrote the names of their loved ones on them, while a pink ribbon was cut by four local people who have either battled cancer themselves, or who have someone close to them who has been effected by the disease.

After the walk, all who took part were greeted by MC Kenny McGorrian, who showed the walkers to some badly needed iced water, tea and sandwiches which were laid on by the Shannon Knights.

The day finished a few hours later after a lively session of entertainment provided by the Hoops group, who played traditional music, while a host of would-be X Factor contestants did their bit to contribute to a party atmosphere.

The total raised by the event will become known in the coming weeks.
