Colleran and Ciobanu on form in Sixmilebridge

The second annual BMOH 10k road race and 5k fun walk was held in Sixmilebridge, with almost 800 competitors taking part.

Two competitors, Simon Baker (Limerick) and Diarmuid Devanney (Sixmilebridge), completed the 10k course on crutches.

In the first kilometre, a group of five athletes made an early break, including last year’s winner, Sergio Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers). He set a time of 30.33 last year and was going all out to break his course record and capture the bonus prize. Going through the 1k mark in 2.55, he was starting to pull away, with Keith Lynch (BMOH) working hard to keep with the leaders.

Mike Cunningham (Bilboa) was leading the next chasing group along with Adrian Linehan (Duhallow), Jude McEntee (Ind), John Hannon and Joe Mooney both (BMOH).

Sergio Ciaobanu went through the 2k point in 5.54 and he was now almost 50m clear.

As the leader went through the 8k mark, he was on target for a new course record but on the stiff climb to the 9k mark he began to drop the pace and crossed the finishing line in 30.54, just 20 seconds outside the course record. Michael Maher finished very strong in 33.02 from the first local athlete James Liddane (BMOH) in 33.22.

BMOH were the team winners with 73 points from Ennis Track on 49 and BMOH B on 103.

In the ladies’ race, Tracy Roche-Johnston (Dooneen AC) started out at a very good pace, with Veronica Colleran (Ennis Track) right on her shoulder. They went through the 1k in 4.30, with Aoifa Carroll (Mallow), Zelma Power (Ennis Track), Noelle Fitzgerald and Loretto Duggan all working well together as they made their way towards the half-way point.

Veronica Colleran went through the half-way point in 19.25 and at this stage she had a 20-second lead on Tracy Roche-Johnston. Over the final 3k, she increased her lead to finish 18th overall with a time of 38.45, with Johnston second in 39.28, followed home by Noelle Fitzgerald (42.28).
