St Joseph’s snatch extra time victory

St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield 0-10
Liscannor 0-8

David O’Brien’s four points were vital to St Joseph’s.
SCORELESS until eight minutes before half time, Doora-Barefield, the 2011 and 2012 county finalists, eventually ground their way into the second round of the senior championship.

In a game in which four red cards were issued, it took 20 minutes of extra time to establish the ultimate two point difference between the teams.  The match finished under floodlights as the Clare County Board stepped up their efforts to get the club football championship out of the way as expediently as possible.

Liscannor, who only scored one point in extra time, had three points on the board before David O’Brien notched his side’s first point. Alan Clohessy pointed two frees for Liscannor, with Kieran Considine adding their remaining early score.
Come half time, however, the teams were tied at 0-4 each as Christy O’Brien and Ivor Whyte added to St Joseph’s tally, while Niall Considine kicked Liscannor’s fourth point in first-half injury time.

Both teams scored three points each in the second half when the most that divided the teams was a single point. Cathal Duggan, on as a first half sub, pointed twice for the winners with David O’Brien adding the third. They could have goaled as early as the first minute of the second half when Stephen Collins cut through but his lay-off evaded Duggan.

Brian Considine, Clohessy and Darren Nagle, with an injury time equaliser, kept Liscannor in it.
Kevin Dilleen (St Joseph’s) and Alan Flaherty (Liscannor) were red carded in the first half of extra time. Stephen Collins had already been sent off on two yellows, while Joe Considine was dismissed under similar circumstances, late in the second half of extra time.
Christy O’Brien scored the only point of the first half of extra time before Eoin Hanrahan stretched the winners’ lead, 0-9 to 0-7, in the fourth minute of the second period. A minute into injury time Alan Clohessy pointed a Liscannor free, reducing the deficit to just a point. However a minute later Colm Mullen kicked a classy point and secured Doora-Barefield’s place in round two of the winners group.

Doora-Barefield manager Mark Rafferty told The Clare Champion he always expected an intense tussle with Liscannor.
“We knew what we were going to get from Liscannor. They have never given anyone an easy game in championship football or in the Cusack Cup for that matter. It was a bruising encounter and we’re quite happy to have come through it. Cathal Duggan was only back week and all through the Cusack Cup we hadn’t played together as a full team, which might explain our slow start,” he said.

Meanwhile Liscannor manager Martin Guerin felt a few decisions went against his team.
“We were three points up and we turned over a few simple balls and gave away a few dubious frees. They seemed to get frees a lot easier than we did. We played better when we came out in the second half and probably should have won it in normal time. It was a good spirited performance and a huge improvement on the league but still the result wasn’t what we wanted,” he acknowledged.
