St Breckan’s U-16s in control in Quilty

St Breckan’s 2-12   Kilrush Shamrocks 1-5

St Breckan’s were crowned Division 2 U-16 football champions at Quilty on Sunday when they overcame the challenge of Kilrush.

A strong wind made conditions difficult for the players but the North Clare squad adapted better and emerged with a merited win.
The winners got a grip on this tie from the outset and it took a fine save from Kilrush goalie Neil Cullinan to deny Aidan Davidson in the opening minutes.
Maccon Byrne landed some excellent points from frees and Davidson followed with another minor.
Davidson scored the game’s first goal after 20 minutes after good work by the outstanding Byrne.
Kilrush were given a great boost four minutes later when Ian Cahill burst through for a goal after good play by Graham Copley.
St Breckan’s hit back immediately and after good play by Byrne and Davidson, Cian Garrihy found the net to help send his side into a 2-8 to 1-0 half time lead.
Kilrush needed a bright start to the second half and they set about cutting back the North Clare side’s big lead. Liam Madigan kicked three points and had a hand in two more as the West Clare outfit cut the winner’s lead to six points.
St Breckan’s, however, clawed their way back into control of the game.
Maccon Byrne landed a good point and as they piled on the pressure, Kilrush goalie Cullinan produced some great stops to deny Byrne, Liam Tierney and Alan Sweeney in turn.
St Breckan’s, however, were stronger overall and went onto record a merited win and lead to Aidan Davidson accepting the cup at the end of play.
