Spoils shared in West Clare derby

Kilmurry Ibrickane 2-10   Miltown, St Joseph’s 3-7

WHEN Miltown, St Joseph’s went eight points clear early in the second half of the Cusack Cup tie at Quilty on Friday evening, everything pointed to them achieving victory over their neighbours, who have dominated Clare football in recent years.

Any meeting of these sides arouses interest and last week’s meeting was no different with a big crowd in attendance. The fact that both sides are coached by Kerrymen, John Kennedy with Kilmurry-Ibrickane and James Fleming with Miltown, added to the interest in the tie, which produced some good passages of football.

A blistering start, which saw them take the lead with a goal from Dessie Mollohan, helped Miltown to lead at the break on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-3. They had second-half goals from Conor McKenna and Brian Curtin but Kilmurry fought back strongly and goals from Noel Downes and Michael O’Dwyer helped them to a deserved share of the spoils.

Given that they were without last year’s captain Peter O’Dwyer, Stephen Moloney, Michael Hogan, Mark McCarthy and Declan Callinan, Kilmurry will be pleased with the result.

St Joseph’s, Doora Barefield 0-9   Kilrush 0-3

IN a disappointing contest at Gurteen on Saturday, the home side proved too strong for Kilrush, a result that consigns the Shamrocks to Division 2 for the coming season and keeps the Doora-Barefield men’s hopes of a place in the play-offs alive.

In a game dominated by defences, there were few scoring opportunities, as the scoreline indicates.

Ennistymon 3-7   Doonbeg 0-15

DANNY Rouine converted a 45’ in the final action of the game to seal victory for Ennistymon over Doonbeg in their tie on Saturday. The result keeps Ennistymon’s hopes of a place in the knock-out stages of the competition alive and ends Doonbeg’s chances of making it into the play-offs.

Doonbeg had the better of the first-half exchanges and they led at the break on a scoreline of 0-11 to 1-4.
