This Saturday, Spanish Point captains Gary Carroll and Mary Saunders will welcome Ringenane Golf Club in the first fixture of a twinning relationship that will continue next spring with a visit to the Cork club. This Saturday, the clubs will play for the newly introduced Hillery/Lynch Shield and competition in the mixed fourball format will be keen to see which club’s name will be inscribed on the shield for the first time. The presentation will take place in the Bellbridge Hotel.
Weekend turkey competitions continue at Spanish Point and last Sunday the format was a modified scramble team of four, which attracted a big entry. In first place were John Moore (13), Brendan McKenna (19), Noel McMahon (18) and Christy Mohally (18) with 80 points. They were followed by PJ Killeen (14), Martin Davies (27), Martin O’Gorman (20) and Michael Reilly (20) on 79 points.
In last week’s seniors’ open, John Moore (13) was the winner with 34 points.
There will be a singles stroke competition this Sunday and a timesheet will operate.
Lahinch
Last Wednesday’s ladies’ open singles competition at Lahinch was won by Elizabeth Williams (28) from Kilkee with 34 points. Ita Mangan (18) from Kilkee was second with 27 points.
In Thursday’s men’s open singles, Adrian Lyons (12) was the winner with 30 points from David Sheedy (7) on 28 and Seamus Walshe (21) on 28.
John Reidy (11) was the winner of the men’s monthly medal competition on Saturday with 69 nett from Christy Killeen (16) on 70 and Paul O’Gorman (11) on 72. Peter Hennessy won the gross with 78, Darragh McDermott (12) and Kieran Sheedy (21) were the winners of the men’s turkey fourball Stableford competition on Sunday with 42 points.
The ladies’ turkey singles Stableford competition on Sunday on the Castle Course was won by Bridie Whelan (32) with 41 points.
Ennis Seniors
Ennis Seniors hosted a modified scramble last week when the winners were Pat Rutherford, Bill Leacy and Noel Pilkington with 41 points from Sean Fitzpatrick, Tony Coote and Sean Brennan, who had a similar score. In third place, also with 41 points, were Michael Culliney, Bernie Hoey and Denis O’Ceallaigh. In fourth place with 39 points were Ned Ryan, Pat McInerney and Mike Butler on 39 points, followed by Joe O’Neill, Gary Stack and Peadar Cosgrove on 38 and PP Cahill, Tom Pender and John Keane, also with 38 points.
Card-playing members of the Ennis club will be glad to hear that combs commenced last Monday night and will continue every Monday night at 7.30pm for the winter season.
Shannon
The ladies’ singles competition at Shannon last week saw handicap secretary Mary McGuane capture the honours with 38 points. Mary had one point to spare from Maura Mulcahy. Eileen McNamara was third with 36 points while junior member Lisa O’Shea was fourth with 34 points.
The gross was won by Jean Murphy-Wright with 20 points.
The men’s Wednesday open singles saw Liam Hogan follow up on his weekend fourball win when he had three points to spare when returning 44 points. Highlight of his opening nine, in which he returned 21 points, was a birdie at the fourth. He then returned a superb 23 points for his back nine, which he covered in one-over, finishing with a birdie at the 18th. In second place on 41 points after a level par round was Darren Keane. Highlights of Darren’s round were birdies at the fifth, 16th and 18th. Michael Corry was third on 40 points with birdies at the eighth and 12th.Visitor Eamon Murphy from East Cork won the gross with 30 points.
The weekend’s men’s competition was a team of four, which saw a quartet of Colm O’Flynn, Colm Reidy, Pat Madden and Tony Connolly capture the honours with 101 points. They had one point to spare from John Gubbins, Maurice Murphy, Alan Wallace and Liam Hogan on 100 points.
There will be an 18-hole men’s singles this weekend, while the ladies will have a similar competition.
Dromoland
The Fred O’Flanagan Memorial Trophy was played for at Dromoland last weekend when Frank Travers emerged as the winner with a score of four up from Noel Stapleton, who had a similar score. Billy Cahill was third on three up followed by Brian Arthur with a similar score. There will be a turkey competition this weekend.
Woodstock
The final of the Woodstock Cup will see captain John O’Connor take on president Jimmie Kelly. In the semi-finals, O’Connor defeated Ollie McNamara while Kelly accounted for Hugh McGrath. The final will be played this weekend.
The Sunday singles was won by Gerry O’Malley (18) with a score of 41 points from TJ McNamara (14) on 40 points. Kieran Dromey (9) was third with 38 points. The masters final and the Dinan Cup will be the competitions this coming weekend.
The ladies’ hampers competition was won by Joan Barrett with 34 points from Jenny McElhinney on 32, Bernie Power on 31, Liz Dinan on 30 and Teresa Sherlock on 29. The presentation will take place on December 5 at the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis. The October league 14-hole competition, is ongoing.
Sixmilebridge
Sixmilebridge Golf Society will hold an outing to Shannon this Saturday, when the tee will be available at 10am.
Clarecastle
Clarecastle Golf Society will hold its next outing at Galway Bay Golf Club on Saturday, October 23 when the first tee will be reserved from 10.30am and a timesheet will operate on the day. Members can secure a preferred tee time by texting 086 3246015.
Clare-Galway Seniors Winter League
In round two of the Clare-Galway Seniors Winter League played at Portumna last week, John Forde from Gort was the winner with 40 points. He had one to spare over Luke Coote, Ennis, with John Daly, Gort, in third spot with 38 points followed by Michael Cullinan (Woodstock) and Finbar Gantley (Gort), who also scored 38 points.
Michael O’Grady, Gort, was next with 37 points followed by his team mates John Ryan and Pat Cradock with 36 points each. Des Clarke, Portumna, was next with 36 points followed by Jimmy Hannigan, Gort, on 35 points. Eamonn Corry, Ennis, won the gross with 25 points. The next round will be played at Kilrush next Wednesday.
Portumna
The golfer-of-the-year award at Portumna was won by Pascal Moran. The final of this year’s Murphy matchplay will be played this Saturday at 2pm. Ronan Nevin and Alan Hayes are the two finalists.
The club foursomes final will also be played on Saturday when Mick McGivern and Ger Brehony take on Kenneth Doyle and David Burke. Pascal Moran (14) with 45 points was the winner of Sunday’s singles from Phonsie Ryan (19) with 44 points and Frank Ryan (13) with 38 points. Sean Cleary (3) won the gross with 35 points while the seniors’ section was won by Pádraig Purcell (18) with 36 points.
Elizabeth Ryan won the 18-hole Stableford with 36 points from Anita Carey with a similar score.
Last week’s open competition was won by John Cleary (6) with 38 points from Philip Harte (11) with a similar score and John M Power (14) with 35 points. Pat Claffey (7) won the gross with 29 points.
East Clare
Sean Jones (18) was the winner of the men’s singles competition at East Clare last weekend with a score of 42 points. He won by two from Pat McKenna (11), with third spot filled by Stephen Moloney (12) on 39.
In the ladies’ seniors section, the winners were Mary Brennan, Sue Casey and Phil Burke from Mary Hogan, Mary Collins and Kathleen Reddan.There will be an 18-hole singles competition for both men and ladies this week.Throughout the month of October, the club is running a 14-hole re-entry competition from Monday through to Saturday each week.
The annual captain’s dinner will take place in the clubhouse on Saturday, November 6 and tickets are available in the office.
Gort
The winner of the men’s 18-hole singles at Gort last week was JJ Crehan with 43 points from John O’Donoghue on 40, Conor Shields on 40 and Christy Quinn on 38. Colman Cooney won the gross with 33 points.
Siobhán Forde was the winner of the ladies’ singles Stableford competition with 32 points. This week, the men will have an 18-hole singles competition while the weekly open will continue on Monday. The ladies will have the Christmas hampers competition.
Corofin
Michael Ryan, Tubber, seems set to collect another Corofin Society golfer-of-the-year award as the season draws to a conclusion. However, he can be caught in the final outing at Ennis next month by club captain Pat Curtis. Darren Kierse and Pat McCarthy occupy third and fourth places respectively following the October outing to Dromoland last Saturday. Michael O’Dell emerged as winner on Saturday from Mathew O’Halloran and Michael Ryan with Gerry Connors in fourth place. Brendan Kearney and Noel Williams won the nines. The final singles outing of the year will be to Ennis on Saturday, November 13.
Pitch and putt
The winners of the three-ball scramble at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club at the weekend were Tommy Kelly, Niall Seery and PJ Considine.
