Spanish Point savour another Munster win

Spanish Point captured another provincial title at the weekend when they won the Munster final of the Towns Cup, a competition for nine-hole courses.

 

Played at Rafeen Creek in Ringaskiddy in Cork, they defeated Ardfert in the final.
The players involved on Sunday in this singles competition were Fergal Hehir, Ross Burke, Anthony Garrihy, Martin Dormer, Micheal Hehir, Seamus McMahon, Kevin Hynes, Mervin Hehir and Stephen Guilfoyle. The team was captained by Martin Glenny and Noel Connellan.

The winner of the Tuesday seniors open Stableford competition was Tony Crowley with a score of 37 points from John O’Sullivan with 33. The winner of the Friday open singles was Eoghan O’Loughlin with 37 points followed by Noel McCloskey with 35 points. The winner of the weekend golfer of the year competition was David Keane with a score of 65 nett from second placed Conor O’Loughlin with 65 nett. In third place was Brendan Reddan with a similar score.
This weekend there is an 18-hole team of three or four rumble.

Lahinch
Ennis man, Stephen Loftus was the winner of the captain’s (John Madden) prize at Lahinch at the weekend. He returned a total of 61 points to win by six from Niall Morrison. In third place, also with 55 points, was Paul Montgomery, followed by Brendan O’Doherty who had a similar score.

They were followed by Ger Maher with 54, John O’Brien with 54, Donie O’Regan with 54, Pat Barriscale with 53, Peter Wallace with 53 and Harry Fehily with 53. Eddie Power won the gross with 50 points from David Conway with 49 points.
Martin O’Sullivan with 35 points was first on Friday, followed by Colm Kennedy with 34. Gary Lavelle was first on Saturday with 35 points, followed by Christy McCaw with a similar score. Ray Hennessy won the past captain’s prize with 34 points.

The captain’s prize to the seniors was played for on the Castle Course and was won by Kieran Sheedy with 39 points, from Cyril O’Dowd with 36.
Last week’s ladies’ singles Stableford competition on the Castle Course was won by Mary O’Mahony (17) with 38 points, from Barbara Foley (17) with 37 points, Geraldine Power (29) with 36 points, Marie O’Connor (16) with 36 points, Joan Barrett (19) with 36 points and Bernadete Scanlan (25) with 36 points.

Saturday’s ladies fourball Stableford competition on the Castle course was won by Miriam Abernethy (8) and Fiona McCarthy (14) with 42 points, from Oonagh Mee (19) and Shirley Halpin (20) with 41, Elaine McElhinney and Geraldine Power with 40, Rose Doyle (12) and Lourdes Gleeson (23) with 39, Jean Basheer (16) and Aileen Hickey (16) with 39.

The ladies’ singles v par competition for the Knox Cup on Sunday was won by Ailish Edwards (24) with five-up from Valerie Shannon (9) with four-up and Jenny Cagney (15) with one-up. Sinead Sexton won the gross with a score of level.
In the silver division the winner was Suzanne Conneely (17), from Pamela Morgan (8) and Maeve Byrne (15) and all returned scores of one-up

The bronze division was won by Ann Heskin (21) with a level score, from Maeve O’Boyle (21) with one-down and Ruth O’Gorman (21), also with one-down.
The Resident’s Cup, a men’s fourball Stableford competition, was played for on the Castle course on Sunday and won by Jimmy Doyle (11) and Eamon Foley (19) with 49 points from Mark O’Donoghue (7) and Bernard Whelan (7) with 48 points, Paddy Spillane (8) and Darragh O’Gorman (10) with 48 and John (22) and Alan Donegan (11) with a similar score.

Ennis
Liam McCannon was the winner of the open singles at Ennis with 40 points, followed by Gerry Bredin on 39, Gary Cunningham on 38, Victor Coote on 38 and Diarmujid O’Connor with 37 points. Stephen Loftus won the gross with 35 points.

In the ladies section, the winner was Geraldine Lynch with 39, from Peggy Duggan with 38 and Mary Sweeney with 35. Anne Morrissey from East Cork won the gross with 38. A total of 199 played.
The mixed scotch foursomes was won by Gerry and Sara Broderick (Gort) with 62.4, from Sean O’Gorman and Carmel Verling with 63.2, with Seamus Kelly and Anne Coote with 67.6 in third place. They were followed by Martin Flaherty and Ger Lynch with 67.8, TJ Scanlon and Imelda Colleran with 67.8, Johnny Kearse and Ethna Murphy with 68, Ollie and Claire Kennelly with 68.8. A total of 140 played in this competition.

The open week team-of-three competition was won by Ned Ryan, Tim Kelly and James O’Connor with 87 points, from Noel Normoyle, John Dempsey and Pat McHugh with 85, with third spot filed by Jason Woods, TJ Scanlan and Pat Whelan with 83.
In the ladies’ section, the winners were Joan Barrett, AM Darmody and Peggy Duggan with 80 points, from Kitty Morris, Mary Gardiner and Sylvia Carroll with a similar score. In third spot with 78 points were Nuala Healy, Bridget Hoey and Margaret Cooney. A total of 186 players participated in this competition.

Kilkee
The winners of the team of four competition at Kilkee at the weekend were Pat Haugh (8) Bobby Fleming (15) Pat Cronin (14) and Patsy Bennett (15) with 101 points. In second place with 98 points were Noel Gavin (13), Ann Cronin (23), Pat Cronin (14) and Patsy Bennett (15) with 98. They were followed by Ciaran Woods (11), Seamus Woods (16), John Spillane (16) and Grainne Woods (35) with 96 points. Fourth spot was filled by Aidan O’Dea (10), Kevin O’Connor (16), Stan O’Neill (17) and Kay O’Neill (26) also with 96 points.

Shannon
The ladies’ August medal was won by Linda Doherty, who returned 71 nett. In second place was Hilary Klein with 72 nett, followed by Catherine Maguire 72, Mary Flynn 73 and Rose Doyle 74. The gross was won by Margaret Hope (12) with 85.

Dromoland
In the singles Stableford competition at Dromoland, the winner was Tom Frawley with 46 points, from John O’Grady with 42 and Brian M Sheedy with 41. Kieran Shanahan was next with 41 while Gordon O’Neill won the junior section with 34.
The ladies three-ball competition was won by Mary Arthur, Angela White and Carola Wixted, from Geraldine Ryan, Sheila Kent and Carina Roseingrave.
In the ladies’ seniors last week the winner was Julie Newman, from Judy Woods.

Woodstock
Adrian Kearney (9) won the captain’s (Eugene Phillips) prize at Woodstock at the weekend with a score of 98.5. He was followed by Frankie Vaughan (16) with 99, Andrew Mason (14) with 103 and Michael Nugent (13) with 103.5.
Anthony Sweeney (2) won the gross with 71. The category winners were Michael Hayes (10), Mark Barrett and Paul Finlan (19). John O’Connor won the past captain’s prize, with Liam McInerney winning the senior’s section. John Guilfoyle was the winner of the guests section with 39 points.

In the junior section, the winner was Patrick Power with 41 points, from Cathal Kelly with a similar score and Conor McMahon with three.

In the captain’s fourball, the winners were John Dempsey and Michael Hayes with 49 points from Colm Mullen and David McCarthy with a similar score. Joe Green and Peter Cosgrove were third with 37 points.
The captain’s prize to the ladies was won by Nancy Burke with 37 points, from Marian Keane with 35, Patricia Graham with 31 and Una Patton with 30. Aideen Walsh won the gross with 26 points while the nines were won by Anne Coote with 21 and Margaret Ann Killeen with 16. Beatrice Foley won the guests section with 33 points.

The Eileen Murphy foursomes will be the competition for ladies on this Sunday.

Doonbeg
Members played for the manager’s prize at Doonbeg at the weekend when the winner was Noel McMahon, from John O’Brien, with Pat O’Malley in third spot.

Kilrush
The 18-hole mixed at Kilrush on Friday was won by Pat Shannon and Anne Hogan with 61.5, from Gearóid Williams and Mary O Sullivan with 64, with third spot filled by Anthony and Geraldine Burke with 64.5. the gross was won by Jim Snr and Mary Young with 79.
The Super Valu open singles on Saturday was won by Niall Frawley with 46 points from Eolann Harrington with 42, Tom Coffey with 40 and Gabriel Looney with 40.

In the open singles stroke on Sunday, Michael Ryan was the winner with 63, from Bill Murphy with a similar score. Barry McMahon was third with 67 while the gross was won by Greg Young with 74.
The draw for the Members Cup men’s singles matchplay has taken place and is posted on the noticeboard.
Open week is currently taking place and competitions continue until Sunday.

The lady captain’s (Margaret Donnelly) prize will be played for this Saturday and a timesheet is in operation.

Portumna
The men’s open fourball at Portumna was won by Dermot Egan (15) and Mike Coniry (16) with 48 points, from Stephen (13) and Philip Madden (19). In third place were Willie Madden (12) and Michael Glynn (8) with 43 points. The gross was won by Sean Cleary (1) and James P McLaughlin with 37 points.
In the ladies open singles the winner was Monica Tynan (Longford, 28) with 41 points from Anne Russell (Mount Temple, 28) with 38 points, Alison Cooper (Moate, 29) with 37 points and Mary M Madden (Portumna, 23) with 37 points.

Gort
The winner of Monday’s 18-hole singles at gort was Keith Warnock (21) with 44 points, from Colman Cooney (4) with 43 points, with third spot filled by Pat Downers (16) with 42 points. The gross was won by David Quirke (3) with 35 points.
The weekend’s 18-hole singles competition was won by Michael O’Malley (18) with 42 points, from Con O’Donoghue (19) with a similar score. Colm Grealish (12) was third with 41 points, while David Quyirke (3) won the gross with 34 points.
The winner of last Friday’s open singles was Brian McLoughlin (1) with 36 points.
In the ladies’ open singles on Monday, the winner was Jodie Coughlan (20) with 38 points, from Ann Jordan (29) with 37 points.
Open week begins on this Saturday and continues until August 18.
In the weekend stroke competition, the winner was Siobhan O’Connor (1) with 63, from Maura Hanrahan (12) with 68.

Sixmilebridge
Sixmilebridge Golf Society will hold an outing to Ballykisteen on Saturday. The tee is reserved from 11.30am.

Clarecastle
Clarecastle Golf Society will hold its next outing to Shannon on Thursday, August 15. First tee has been reserved from 2pm and members and guests intending to play should text their preferred tee time to 086 3246015

The society recently hosted a golf day at Dromoland as part of a very successful 10-day Clarecastle Gathering festival.
Over 170 golfers participated with international visitors from the UK, US and continental Europe basking in the glorious sunshine.

The competition was won by Shay O’Callaghan and Bernard Mackessy with 46 points, from Tom Pyne and Ml Glynn with 45 points. In third place were Ger Hartnett and Pat O’Shea with 44 points, followed by Ml and Eoin Vaughan with 42, Declan Conway and Paschal Looney with 42 with sixth spot filled by Edward Cullen and Paul Doyle with 41.

The other prize winners were Muriel O’Flynn and Phillip O’Sullivan (nearest the pin), Patricia Lamb and Barry Lee (longest drive), Mick Lambe, Barry Dodds (UK), international prize, Oisin Casey, Adam Spencer (youngest player prize).

The prize giving table was enhanced by the presence of Solas an Chláir an impressive Gathering limestone commemorative piece, commissioned by Clare County Council, symbolising a county of welcomes and people connectivity. Local Clarecastle sculptor, Shane Gilmore, provided significant design inputs to the Gathering symbol.

East Clare
Tony Cleary Dromoland was the winner of the Men’s Senior Cup at East Clare with a score of 71 gross. Barry Hurley won the Junior Scratch Cup with 74 gross while the net winner was Flan Clune with 63 nett.

In the Intermediate Scratch Cup, Mike Carey was the winner with 75. The nett winner was Paul Madden with 63.
In the open team of three the winners were Peter and Kevin O’Flanagan and Neil Whelan, while the winners in the ladies’ section were Bridie Hanrahan, Evelyn Skehan and Nancy Starr.

Catherine Minogue won the ladies 18-hole competition from Tara Whelan. The category winners were Sadie Conroy, Brigid Minogue and Mary Rogers.
In the Friday scramble the winners were Tony McNulty, Teresa Bradley and William Hayes from John Fahy, Steve Symes and Joan Kinsella with third spot filled by Stephen Moloney, Jim Greene and Brigid Minogue.

This weekend the men’s club have an 18-hole stroke competition from the white markers and an 18-hole Stableford from the yellow markers. The ladies also have an 18-hole Stableford.

Pitch and putt
Gerry Kierce won the strokeplay competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday from Kevin Woods. Michael Kerin won the gross.
