Spanish Point beats the weather

DESPITE the very wet weather over the holiday period, Spanish Point Golf Course was very busy with various members’ competitions and regular visitors playing with societies. The seniors’ open on December 18 was won by Brendan Reddan (15) with 41 points and the singles on the December 23 was won by Noel Connellan (16) on 39 points with Brian O’Loughlin second on 38 points.

 

On St Stephen’s Day, the singles was won by Eoghan O’Loughlin (3) with 35 points and on the following weekend, Eoghan was also the winner with a great score of 41 points with Ray Boyce (18) second with 40 points. The competition on New Year’s Day was a singles Stableford with Sean Stokes (25) in first place on 38 points and Donal Burke (19) second with 37 points.

This weekend will see the captain Eoghan O’Loughlin and lady captain Helen Sullivan drive in to office for the year and the event will include a nine-hole team competition followed by the prize-giving and a social evening hours in the clubhouse.

Ennis
ENNIS seniors held a three-ball scramble last week when the winners were John Joe Keane, Michael Dempsey and Francis Landy with 79 points. They were followed by Sean O’Gorman, Bernard Hanrahan, Willie Moloney and Pat McInerney on 78. In third spot were Tim Kelly, Dick Herbert and Richard O’Connell on 74 followed by Michael Kerin, Jimmy Kearns and John McEntee with 74; Eamon Murphy, Bobby Burke and Sean Fitzpatrick with 74 and Tom Pilkington, Jim Felle and Michael Noonan on 73.

The incoming captain, Sean Fitzpatrick’s drive-in will take place at 10.15am this Thursday.

In the men’s 14-hole fourball competition on Sunday, the winners were Seamus Frehill and Seamus Hanrahan with 39 points from Flan Glynn and James Clune on 35 with third spot filled by Martin Meehan and Richard Keane on 34.

Gort
MICHAEL Ryan (17) with 42 points from Stephen Wilson (12) with 38 points, Tony Kenny (16) 38 points and Ger Hoban (14) 38 points. John Greer (5) won the gross with 32 points at Gort.

There will be a similar competition this weekend. 

Lahinch
THE winners of the New Year’s Day scramble on the championship course at Lahinch were Thomas Neenan (Scr), Frank Keane (9), Kevin Glynn (9) and John Reynolds (11) with 57.1 nett from Michael (11) and Vaughan (18), Jim (18) and Margaret Cooney (25) with 58.8 nett.

Saturday’s singles Stableford competition was won by Kevin Glynn (9) with 39 points from Pádraig Hayes (7) with a similar score.

In a similar competition on Sunday, Gerry McGrath (23) was the winner with 43 points from Ross O’Doherty (18) with 40 points.

Dromoland
THE wine hamper competition at Dromoland on Sunday was won by Ian Mulready with 42 points from Donncadh Nagle with 41, Frank Travers with 41 and Diarmaid McMahon with  40.

This week’s competition will be a singles Stableford event with the Winter League to commence a week later.

Shannon
SHANNON hosted a team-of-four modified scramble last weekend when the winners were John O’Connell, Noel Purcell, Adrian Treacy and Barry O’Riordan with 88 points.

In a men’s 15-hole singles on January 2, the winner was Eamonn Fanneran with 37 points from James Bullman with 32 points.


East Clare

EAST Clare hosted a men’s 14-hole singles on Sunday when the winner was Tony McMahon (10) with 37 points followed by Russell Trow (16) with 36 points. the previous week’s winner was James Nagle (19) with 36 points.

The winter league is in full swing and this week’s format is a team-of-three scramble. The early leaders are Val Donnellan’s team closely followed by Ger Hogan’s team with William O’Brien’s team also producing some good scores including a hole-in-one for Connie McKenna.


Portumna

PORTUMNA hosted a 14-hole singles at the weekend when the winners were 6 handicapper Ger Lynch (category 0-10) with 32 points, Michael Kennedy (12) with 31 points in the 11-14 category, Brian Fahy (15) with 35 points in the 15-18 category, Martin Quinn (20) in the 19 and over category and Joe McCormack (19) with 32 points.

The December qualifiers of the open three-ball, which runs until April of this year are Cillian Duggan Ennis 15, Niall Heeney Ennis 15 and Michael Daffy, Ennis Golf Club 17 (13) with  50 points. In second place were Aiden McIntyre 16, Donal O’Meara 20 and James O’Meara 16 with 50 points.

The final is on Saturday, May 4. 

The president, Suzanne Corcoran, lady captain Pauline McEvoy and the men’s captain Martin Carty’s drive-in will take place on Sunday, January 21 at 12 noon.

Kilrush
The Spring league will begin shortly at Kilrush and will continue for four weeks followed by the play offs.
The ‘Scrap Saturday’ club fundraiser will take place on Saturday January 26 and details can be had from Murt Collins or PJ Maher.

Mens singles competitions will take place each Sunday over the coming weeks.


Woodstock

THE winner of the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend was Brendan Keogh (17) with 43 points from Eugene Phillips (18) who had a similar score.

There will be another club singles this weekend.


Clare Teachers

THE Clare Teachers Society held an outing to Lahinch on Saturday when the format was a team of three. The winners were Leo Quinlan, Michael Kilmartin and Sean Cleary with 85 points from Sean Daly, Frank Coffey and Conor Murphy who had a similar score. In third spot were Tony Sweeney, Seamus and Kathleen Frehill with 81 points.

The society’s next outing will be on Saturday, February 2 when the venue will be Athenry and the tee time is 10am.


Pitch and Putt

DENIS McElligott was the winner of the strokeplay competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. In second place was Paddy Sheedy, while the gross was won by Kenneth Kerin.
