PROJECTS in South Galway are to receive more than €27,000 this year after Galway County Council announced details of the projects that have been allocated funding under community support schemes.
Under the community-managed enterprise facilities and services scheme, Kinvara Farmers’ Market is to receive €1,500 to promote the market, a 50% increase on last year’s allocation. Coole Music and Arts group are to get €2,000 towards the professional costs of establishing the organisation. Burrenbeo Trust, based in Kinvara, will get €1,500 support towards the publication of its newsletter.
Agricultural events and festivals are to benefit from the funding too. Tubber show has been allocated €500, while the Gort and District Show Company will received €1,350. Ardrahan Agricultural Show is to receive the same amount, while Clarenbridge’s famed Oyster Festival will get a boost of €2,500 this year
Gort Community Education Group Ltd has been allocated €2,890 to improve wheelchair access to its building under the upgrading of community facilities fund and Gort Community Council and Community Centre has been promised €4,830 for the upgrading of the fire alarm system.
Gort Youth Club will receive €600 to purchase equipment for use in the club.
The local authority has promised €500 to Ardrahan AED committee (Defibrillator Group), €400 to Ardrahan Community Games committee and €300 each for St Coleman’s Camogie Club, the Goya Gang and the South Galway Pony Club.
Gort Cinema Club will get just under €3,000 to purchase a projector, screen, DVD player and a sound system, while the family resource centre will benefit from €1,962 to buy a colour copier, scanner and printer.
Schemes promoting cleaner environments were also among the beneficiaries from the Community Support Programmes.
Ardrahan Tidy Towns will be given €1,300 and the George’s Street Residents’ Association in Gort has been allocated €350 for landscaping and general maintenance works.
Galway County Council revealed the funding allocations on Friday last.
“It is great to see support for the various groups who benefit from these funds and it also shows that Galway County Council is committed to supporting community groups and voluntary organisations,” said local councillor Gerry Finnerty.
Councillor Finnerty added that Galway County Council had confirmed to him that The Joseph Browne Traditional Music Project will receive €500; Kinvara Area Music Collective (KAM) and the Cooley Collins Traditional Music Festival will both be given €400 while Coole Music and Arts is to receive €1,200 under the arts acts supports. The Lady Gregory Autumn Gathering, he added, will receive €500 under cultural tourism supports.
