Celebrating 20 years of providing accessibility to excellence in music, the Summer Music on the Shannon/Summer Music in Galway 2013 festivals return this year bringing music to venues across Clare and Galway.
Established in 1994 by Clare Music Makers in Ennis, the classical music festival ran as Summer Music in Clare from 1994 to 1999 and then expanded in 2000 when it became Summer Music on the Shannon/Summer Music in Galway (SMG).
The music school and festival offers musicians of all ages, and at all levels of achievement, programmes that stimulate inherent artistic talent through a wide variety of classes, rehearsals, solo recitals and ensemble performances.
By participating in an intensive and exciting summer music programme, students are encouraged to explore opportunities for the further enjoyment of music.
The mission of the program is to develop a classical summer music school and festival with the highest international standards of performance and teaching and with no barriers to admission based on age, level of ability or financial disadvantage.
Classes and performances take place from Wednesday, July 31, at venues including; Glór, Ennis; St Colomba’s Church, Ennis; Holy Family School, Ennis; AnnaCarriga, Pavilion, Killaloe; Claregalway Castle, Claregalway, County Galway; St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway City and St Joseph’s Church, Limerick City.
On Wednesday St Columba’s Church in Ennis will hold the launch event that will mark the SMG 20th anniversary at 8pm. Events will continue on Thursday August 1 at the same venue with the Golden Age of the Symphony concert.
Opera for all ages takes place in Glór on August 2 at 8pm and AnnaCarriga Pavilion in Killaloe hosts a Lakeside Prom on August 3 at 2.30pm. That night it also hosts Midsummer Music on the Lake at 8pm.
