The appointment of Davy Fitzgerald as the next manager of the Clare senior hurling team is now a formality.
The Sixmilebridge man, who recently completed four years at the helm with Waterford, was the only one nominated for the vacant post when last Friday’s deadline for nominations expired.
His appointment is to be ratified at the next board meeting on Tuesday, October 11.
It’s been a busy week for the three-time All-Star goalkeeper, who has returned to the playing fields, answering an SOS from his club after their regular net-minder, Derek Fahy, suffered a serious facial injury, which will rule him out of action for a while.
“Returning to the playing field wasn’t something I expected. I am just helping out my club and I am glad to be able to help in any way, whether it be on the field or on the sideline,” commented the 40-year-old.
Fitzgerald isn’t the only member of Clare’s All-Ireland winning teams from 1995 and 1997 in the news this week.
Ollie Baker, a midfield powerhouse in those sides, is being linked with the vacant post in Offaly. The former St Joseph’s man, a Tullamore-based Garda Sergeant, is hotly tipped to succeed Joe Dooley.
Meanwhile, Wednesday next is the closing date for nominations for the position of Clare senior football manager. Outgoing manager Micheál McDermott told this week’s GAA county board meeting he is interested in being re-appointed for another term.
