Sixmilebridge edge it in high scoring affair

Sixmilebridge 3-21
Tulla 6-11

IN a high-scoring U-21C hurling championship quarter-final replay at Kilkishen last Wednesday, Sixmilebridge caused a surprise with a one-point win over a fancied Tulla side.

A contribution of 3-8 from Sean Lynch inspired the ’Bridge to this win, which has led to a semi-final date against Feakle-Killanena this weekend.
Tulla corner-forward Diarmuid O’Connor scored four goals in the tie but ended up in the losing team. Tulla’s other goals came from Colm Halpin and David McInerney with McInerney also scoring seven points, one an excellent effort from a long-range sideline cut.
Kevin Lynch started where he left off in the drawn game with the opening goal following good work by Cathal O’Connor. This was followed by points from Eoin Loughnane, Lynch and a Daragh O’Connor free to put the ’Bridge 1-3 to no score up. Tulla opened their account through David McInerney with a free, quickly followed by a sideline before Daragh O’Connor and McInerney exchanged points from placed balls again. With half-time approaching a goal, from Tulla made the score 1-7 to Tulla’s 1-6.
The second half opened with the O’Connor brothers and Sean Lynch adding five points before Tulla got off the mark with a goal from their corner-forward. Scores were tit for tat after this before Tulla hit the Bridge for a hat trick of goals in quick succession to take the lead for the first time in the game to lead by five points.
However, the ’Bridge dug deep and their persistence worked when two goals and a few points from Sean Lynch and a number of points by the O’Connors put the ’Bridge back into a five-point lead on full-time. Tulla piled on the pressure in injury time but a goal and a point from David McInerney weren’t not enough on a day when all but five of the winners’ scores came from play.
