Sherlock back with a win

Ennis Light Welterweight Lee Sherlock made a tentative comeback from injury on Friday last in the local community centre with a victory over old adversary Willie Harty from the Rathkeale club in Limerick.
The bout was one of 13 contests with fortunes fluctuating from which, ultimately, the Limerick boxers emerged victorious.
It was perhaps a minor blip for the home side but will serve as a wake-up call with the boys’ and youths’ championships getting under way in the coming fortnight.
Sherlock’s win on the night was the highlight and avenged a defeat, which Harty inflicted on home territory last year and indeed the Ennis teenager showed signs of power and progress since last season. He controlled the bout from the centre of the ring, using his southpaw right to accurate scoring effect and troubling Harty with piercing left hooks to the head and body.
He was upbeat after the victory and is extremely happy with his form at Lt Welterweight. He reckons his biggest battle will be his Clare championship clash with Kilfenora’s improving Robbie Cassidy, whom he has much respect for in the heat of battle.
Triple national title-holder Keelan Sexton served up some vintage boxing, punching in a pitched battle at Middleweight with Cormac Long and he came through by the narrowest of margins. Sexton begins the quest for his fourth national title and a spot on the Irish team for the home internationals in the coming weeks, and is gradually finding his feet in the tough Middleweight environs.
Lightweights Stephen Casey and Simon McDonagh battled it out in a hugely entertaining battle without seeking sanctuary in any of the three torrid rounds of action. McDonagh is as tenacious as they come and he kept his chin tucked in as he waged mayhem on the Limerick boy. This was close and drew sustained applause from the audience at the end with victory going to the Ennis fighter.
There was a surprise reversal for Middleweight Wayne Danaher who performed some heroics in the recent National Youths’ Tournament in the National Stadium where he was a bronze medal winner. He found it tough against twice national champion Michael Harty and never got out of the blocks in the first round. He upped the ante quite considerably in the third round and caught the oncoming Harty with good scoring lefts to the head and body, but was well out of contention when the final bell sounded.
