Shannon’s O’Shea makes Irish squad


Eleven-year-old schoolgirl Lisa O’Shea from Shannon has been selected for the Irish Junior High Performance Squad. The Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) has selected two high-performance squads, one senior and one junior, to develop Ireland’s top amateur female golfers and deliver international success throughout 2011 and beyond under the guidance of manager David Kearney.

Shannon

In the Shannon ladies’ singles golfer of the year competition, Connie Corry continued on her winning way when her 37 points proved too good for the rest of the field. Connie had two points to spare from Kathy Hurley, who was second on 35 points. Ann Daly was third with 34 points while Liz O’Sullivan won the gross with 21 points.
The Wednesday open singles saw John Madden capture the spoils with 42 points. Despite having no score at the second, John covered the remaining eight holes in one under gross, recording back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth to turn with 22 points. He covered the inward nine in two over, with a further birdie coming at the 17th. John had three points to spare from Barry Fitzgerald, who edged out Jarleth O’Looney by virtue of a better back nine, both returning 39 points. The gross was captured by Ed Hickey with 34 points.
The ladies’ club will hold its annual general meeting on Monday, November 15 at 8pm in the clubhouse while the men’s club will hold theirs on the following evening at 8pm in the clubhouse.
The annual meeting of the joint club will take place on Tuesday, December 7 at 8pm in the clubhouse.
This weekend there will be a men’s three-person scramble while the ladies will have a 15 hole singles.

Ennis

Friday’s open singles at Ennis was won by Ross Darmody with 39 points from Jack Darmody on a similar score. Sam Doyle was third with 38 points while the gross was won by Gary Collins with 31 points.
Jason Woods and Noel Whelan won Sunday’s open fourball with 44 points from Richard Keane and Brian Kearney, who had 41 points. In third spot, also with 41 points, were Kieran Ryan and Cyril Corry.
The weekly open singles will continue on Friday with a scramble on Saturday at 1pm and a turkey fourball on Sunday.
The Ennis ladies’ masters final was won by Bernie Browne with 71 from Della Burns on 76 and Valerie Hassett on 78. Pamela Murphy won the gross with 81.
In the ladies’ seniors outing last week the winners were Geraldine O’Mahony, Claire Ruane and Mary Glynn with 48 from Mary McMahon, Jean Considine and Carmel Verling on 49. In third spot, also with 49, were Mary Colton, Bernie Brooks and Eileen Corry.

Portumna

In the men’s open singles at Portumna at the weekend, Noel Durack (11) was the winner with 40 points from Bernard Merrick (19) with 39 and Stuart Angus (6) with 36 points. Barry Kearney (6) won the gross with 30 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by Noel Whelan (6) from Ennis with 40 points from Michael Lambe (13) with 38 points and Joe Bermingham (16) with 37 points. Niall Maher (6) won the gross with 31 points.
There will be a semi-open fun day on this Sunday when the format will be three-ball waltz. The golf will be followed by presentation of prizes and refreshments.
Leanne Cassidy, Ronan Hayes and Ben Murphy have been chosen to receive Connacht coaching for the coming year while Sean Brien has been recalled to the Connacht U-13 panel.
Miriam Hynes (16) won the 18-hole Stableford competition for ladies with 39 points from Ann Cassidy (4), who had a similar score.
The autumn team league was won by Lilian Austin, Anita Carey, Ann A Carthy, Mary Jo Kelly and Elizabeth Ryan with 513 points. Ann Cassidy won the award for the best individual score with 185 points.
The annual general meeting of the ladies’ section will take place on Sunday, November 14 at 4pm in the clubhouse. Motions and nominations must be with the secretary seven days before the meeting.
The annual mass for deceased members will take place in the clubhouse on Friday, November 12.

Lahinch

Conor Williams (5) from Adare Manor was the winner of the men’s open singles at Lahinch last Thursday.
Sunday’s men’s singles Stableford competition was won by Michael F Hanrahan (14) with 37 points from Eamonn O’Riordan (24) on 33 points and John Murphy (14) with 35 points.
The winners of the rumble on the championship course on Sunday were Enda (4) and Ruth Connolly (18) and Sean McKeon (11) with 82 points from Catherine McKenna (18), Anne Vaughan (13) and Niall Naughton (18), who had 80 points. In third spot with 79 points were Donie O’Shea (14), John Skerritt (11) and Weiner Kunz (14).
In a similar competition on the Castle Course, Matthew Griffin (12) Des Hanrahan (16) and Pat Falvey (15) were the winners with 93 points from Jack Meaney (22) Tom Greene (21) and Willie Moore (11) with 90 points.
Monday’s men’s fourball v par competition on the championship course was won by Niall Goulding (1) and Hilary Haydon (13) with five up from Stephen Hennessy (5) and Brian O’Friel (9) with a similar score.
In a ladies’ turkey singles competition on the championship course on Monday, Rosaleen Frazer (23) was the winner with 35 points from Anne Vaughan (13) on 34 points.
In a similar competition on the Castle Course, Oonagh Fitzpatrick (20) was the winner with 34 points. 

East Clare

Martin Mason (19) won the men’s singles open competition at East Clare at the weekend with 44 points from Kevin Wallis (14) on 43 points and Kieran Clancy (10) on 42 points.
In the men’s open team-of-three competition, Stephen Moloney (12), Mark Clune (15) and Tim Walsh (17) were the winners with 66 points. The winners in the mixed category were Ger Hogan (12), Liam Nolan (15) and Catherine Minogue (22) with 56 points, while the ladies’ winners were Siobhán Shanahan (18), Sue Casey (29) and Michelle Wood (36) with 53 points.
The winners of the senior ladies’ competition were Mary Hogan and Mary Collins from Marie Long, Ann Culloo and Sue Casey.
Names are now been taken for the winter league, which commences next month.

Dromoland

There was a huge turnout at Dromoland at the weekend for the three-ball scramble in aid of Cahercalla Hospice, when the winners were Alan Neville, David and Michael Casey from Brian Arthur, Jason O’Donnell and Brian Hickey. In third spot were Ray, Ryan and Hugh O’Neill and they were followed by Brian Rockford, Daniel Reddan and Gary McCormack.
The senior matchplay cup final took place on Monday, when a very competitive match went down the 18th before Tony Kelly emerged as winner from Kieran Newman. This week there will be an 18-holes Stableford turkey competition.

Spanish Point

Each Tuesday, the Spanish Point club runs an open seniors singles competition, which continues through the winter months.
Former men’s club captain David Browne (23), played very well in the 18-hole Stableford singles played last week to win with a score of 35 points.
In the annual PJ Downes Intermediate Scratch Cup the winner was Conor Egan (13) with 76 gross, from Thomas Dormer (13) with a similar gross.
In the club turkey singles stroke competition, the winner was John Meere (15) with  61 nett, from Martin Glenny (14) with 62 nett, and Brian O’Loughlin (11) with  62 nett.
The bank holiday weekend two-ball scramble was won by Derry Waldron (19) and Carl O’Neill (27) with 58.5 nett, from Gerry Meade (16) and John O’Sullivan (17) with 58.75 nett.
The Bank Holiday Monday singles was won by Christy Mohally (15) with 41 points from Conor Egan (13) on 38 points and Brendan McCarthy (12) with 38 points. There will be a singles Stableford this weekend and there is a timesheet in the clubhouse.

Doonbeg GAA

Doonbeg GAA Club held its eighth annual golf classic at Doonbeg Links over the weekend.
The winners were Murt Conlon, Dave Finn, Garry White and Dan Finn on 92 followed in second by Leslie O’Meara, Brian Grogan, Dan Hogan and Matt Donoghue. Third were Dave Begley, Paddy O’Grady, Johnny Clune and Seamus Mungovan and in fourth were Brendan Coyne, Sean McMahon, TJ McNamara and Raymond Boyce.
Leslie O’Meara won the longest drive, which was on the 17th, while Catherine O’Brien won the prize for nearest the pin, which was on the 14th.

Bridgetown

Bridgetown Society had a successful captain’s (Sean Duggan) day in Portumna last Saturday, when 32 members participated.
Ollie McCoy was the overall winner with 38 points from Liam Hession on 34 and TJ Burns on 32.
Pat Fitzgerald won category A with 30 points from Tom Buckley on 29 while Tom Nolan won category B with 31 points from John Daly, who had a similar score.
Pat Duggan was the winner of category C with 30 points from John Walsh on 22. The nines were won by Frank Moloney and Timmy Jones while TJ Burns won the long drive with Francis Moloney winning the prize for nearest the pin. Peter Hayes won the guests’ section.
Francis Moloney won the golfer of the year award.

Clare Teachers

Woodstock was the venue for an outing for the Clare Teachers Society last week when John O’Brien emerged as the winner with 38 points from Martin Mason on a similar score. Pat McNamara was third on 37 points while the category winners were Michael Kilmartin with 33, Seamus Frehill with 35 and Mary Glynn with 25. The nines were won by Con Woods with 18 and Michael Cummins with 20.
The next outing will be to Woodstock and this will take place on Saturday, November 6, when the tee will be available from 9.30am to 11am. Those wishing to play should contact Joan at 086 3167365.

Clare-Galway Seniors League

Pat Harte (Kilkee) returned a score of 38 points to win the Clare-Galway Seniors Winter League outing to Kilrush last week. He was followed by Paul Higgins (Ennis) and Brendan Dolan (Gort), with similar scores. Paddy Jordan and John Forde (both Gort) were next with 37 points followed by John Keane (Ennis) and Pat Fahey (Gort), also with 37 points with Luke Coote (Ennis) next on 36 points, Peadar Cosgrove (Ennis) with 35 and Kevin Mulkerrins (Gort) with 34. Tony Kehoe (Ennis) won the gross with 28 points.
The next round will take place in Lahinch on Wednesday, November 10.

Woodstock

The weekend’s two-person scramble at Woodstock was won by Robbie and Jason Dormer with 60 nett and they won from Joe Collins and Nickey Ryan on 60.5 nett.
Next weekend’s competition will be a singles Stableford event.

Doonbeg Society

Members of Doonbeg Society will play for their captain’s (Michael Carigg) prize this Sunday at Doonbeg, when the tee will be available from 9am to 10.30am. To secure a time, members must contact Michael Carigg at 087 2789957.

Gort

Martin Whelan won the 18-hole singles competition at Gort at the weekend with 38 points. He had one to spare from Stephen Henriques with Gerry Glynn, also with 37, in third spot and Seamus Burke next with 35. Tom Deveney won the gross with 30 points.
Monday’s open singles was won by Pat Fitzpatrick with 40 points from Colin Whelan on 38, Jerry Leahy on 37 and Brendan Lyons on 37. Colman Cooney won the gross with 31 points.
In the ladies’ Christmas hampers competition, Margaret McMahon was the winner with 40 points from Gabrielle Warnock on 38, Josephine Cummins on 37 and Sara Broderick on 37.
The ladies’ club annual meeting will take place in the clubhouse this Sunday at 6pm while the men’s club annual meeting will be in the clubhouse on Monday night at 8pm.
This weekend, the men will have an 18-hole singles Stableford competition while the ladies Christmas cracker competition will also begin.

Ennis seniors

Ennis seniors hosted a three-ball scramble last week when the winners were Dick Burke, Joe O’Brien and John Stack with 46.4.
In second place were Gerry Gilligan and Ollie Kenneally with 46.8 and they were followed by Terry Hughes, Pat McInerney and Michael Cullinan with 47.30, Pat Cahill, Tom Pilkington and Tim McAllister on 47.5, Michael Vaughan, Noel Ruane and Brian Warner with 47.7 and Ger O’Brien, David Dillon and Tim McGrath on 48.3. Michael Vaughan had a hole in one at the 13th.
Ennis will host the next round of the Clare-Galway Seniors league this Thursday.

Pitch and putt

The winners of the St Francis Credit Union Pitch and Putt Cup, played last Sunday, were the Clare Road team, which included Gareth Kerin, Joseph McElligott, Tony Clancy, David McElligott, Noel Cuddihy and PJ Considine.
The winner of the gross prize was Marty Fawl. The best nett score for the Cill Na Mona team was provided by Martin Walsh, with Ger Hanrahan having the best gross. Kitty Murphy from Cill Na Mona was the overall winner of the ladies’ prize.
