Shannon into Barton Shield Munster final

Shannon qualified for the Munster final in the Barton Shield when they emerged from the group stage at East Clare last weekend.

 

In the opening round on Saturday, they received a walkover from Ennis. Woodstock defeated Roscrea, Dromoland Castle overcame Charleville but the host club went down to Adare Manor.
In round two Shannon defeated Limerick and Lahinch accounted for Dromonald Castle but Woodstock went out to Nenagh.

On Sunday morning, Shannon beat Nenagh and Lahinch accounted for Castletroy to set up an all-Clare meeting which Shannon won to progress to the next stage and emulate the club’s Pierce Purcell team that qualified for the North Munster final a few weeks back. That match, against Charleville, was due to take place last Thursday in Castletroy but was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Munster final of the Barton shield will take place in Kinsale on August 15.

Kilrush
Michael Studdert (17) was the winner of the singles competition at Kilrush on Sunday with 44 points. He defeated John McGrath (16) who had 40 points and Pat Shannon (18) who also had 40 points.
In the Friday mixed, Pat Shannon and Jean Lorigan were the winners from John Stapleton and Ursula Lineen with third place filled by Ollie McNamara and Anne Brennan.

The Kilmihil society’s Fr Pat Malone team-of-four competition on Saturday was won by Declan Conway, Fred Hofler, Francie Franklin and Ger Ryan with 94 points from Eamonn and Liz Rigney, Billy and Anne Coen with 89 points. In third spot, also with 89 points, were Paddy Carmody, Bernie Clancy, Dolores Reidy and Mary Carmody.

The lady vice captain’s (Margaret Donnelly) prize will be played for on Thursday, June 21.
Michael Hogan’s vice captain’s prize will be played for on Saturday, June 23 and a timesheet is in operation. Open week is currently underway and continues until June 17. The draw for the Hartman cup mixed foursomes will take place on the weekend of June 23.

Lahinch
Men’s captain (Ray Hennessy) prize to the ladies was the competition at Lahinch on Sunday when the winner was Fiona McCarthy (16) with 40 points from Edwina O’Brien (18) with 39 points, Niamh Whelan (11) with 39 and Nollie McCarthy (20) with 38 points. Eileen Rose Power won the gross with 33 points.
In the silver division Jenny Cagney (15) won with 36 points from Val Shannon (8) on 35 points, Miriam Abernethy (8) on 35 points and Connie Fahy (19) with 35 points.

In the bronze division, Margaret Cooney (27) won with 36 points from Liz O’Driscoll (21) with 34 points, Carmel Burke (25) with 33 points and Máire Hanrahan (23) with 33 points. The nines were won by Kyra Donworth (10) with 21 points and Sinéad Sexton (20) with 19 points.

The Phelps Vase, a singles Stableford competition, was played for on the championship course last week when the winner was Mark McGrath (4) with 39 points from Domhnall O’Mahony (8) with 38 points, Brian Whitaker (5) with 38 points, Jimmy Doyle (13) with 37 points, Martin Guerin (18) with 37 points and Liam McDonnell (6) with 37 points. Declan McInerney won the gross with 35 points.

In the O’Loughlin Cup on the Castle Course, Miriam Abernethy (8) won with 37 points from Margaret Cooney (27) and Mary O’Brien (20) with similar scores. Valerie Hassett won the gross with 28 points.
Pamela Morgan (8) won the silver division with 36 points and Helena Tiernan (24) won the bronze with a similar score.

The open singles on Thursday last was won by Neil Bedford (7) from Craddockstown with 34 points
In Saturday’s singles competition, Walter O’Brien (12) was the winner with 38 points from Paul McInerney (5) with a similar score and Jim McMahon (12), also with 38 points.

In the Kilcoran House Cup on Sunday Adrian Lyons McMahon (8) won class A (handicap limit 12) with 71 from Kevin Glynn (10) with 72 and Frank Keane (0) with 73. Paul McInerney won the gross with 78
In the Pretoria cup (class B, handicaps 13-28), Gerald Shanahan (15) was the winner with 71 from Paddy Ryder (14) with 72 and Brian McCarthy (20) with 74.

Three of the eight events for the Golfer of the year have now been played. The five best returns count in this competition.

On June 23 and 24, the John Burke Club Championship will be held over the Old Course. This prestigious event has been moved to the middle of the season in order to allow members the opportunity to play 36 holes stroke over the Old Course when the course is likely to be in peak condition.

This year’s format will include a shotgun start at 9am on day two limited to the top 60 scores from Saturday’s first round, (18 off-blue tees, 42 off-white tees – playing in threes). A light lunch will be provided to all Sunday players and the presentation will take place immediately afterwards.

Dromoland
The weekend’s v par competition for men at Dromoland was won by Killian Howard with six-up from Brian Shally on five-up and Paul Cusack on four-up. Pádraig McDaid won the over 18-handicap category with three-up.

In the ladies’ competition the winner was Cora O’Toole from Mairéad Bergin with Julie Fitzgerald in third spot.

The Irish mixed foursomes takes place this weekend in Dromoland. Next weekend’s members competition will be a singles Stableford. Dromoland juniors won the first qualifiers in the Clare Junior League at Lahinch at the weekend.

Shannon
There was a big entry for the Shannon lady captain’s (Lynn Kelly) prize on Saturday when Sheila Forde (14) won with 71 nett from Lynn Darcy (14) who had a similar score. Colette Colleran (18) was third with 72 followed by Sandra Smyth (16) with a similar score, Carmel Regan (21) with 73, Eileen Quinn (24) with 74 and Francis Murphy (25) with 74. Lisa O’Shea (10) won the gross with 81. Eileen McNamara (24) won the past captain’s prize with 74, while the category winners were Liz O’Sullivan (15) with 74, Deirdre Hennessy (22) with 74 and Margaret Ryan (29) with 79.

The nines was won by Sheila Hickey (25) and Noreen Neylon (17), while Breda Dohenny won the guests’ section. Madge Young won the putting competition.

The lady captain’s prize to the men was won by Gerry Dunne (14) with 44 points from John McCormack (18) with a similar score, Roger McMahon (15) was third with 42 points while Fearghal O’Connell (8) won the gross with 34 points. John Geary won the guests section with 36 points.

In last week’s open singles Patrick Hession (18) won with 42 points from John Lonergan (19) with 41 points and Gerry Luttrell (19) with 40 points. Paul O’Neill (1) won the gross with 36 points.

Gort
The Josie McInerney Memorial Open, an 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Gort, was won by Philip McInerney (19) with 44 points, from Coley Smyth (14) with 42 points, Colm Beakey (18) with 42 points and Joe Geoghegan (9) with 41 points. The gross was won by Ronan Mullarney (3) Galway with 35 points while the seniors’ section was won by Michael O’Grady (18) with 37 points.

Open week takes place this week and continues until Sunday. In the ladies’ competition last week, the winner was Hannah McInerney (10) 71 from Ruth Naughton (19) 71.

Last week’s open singles was won by Helen McCormick (20) with 38 points from Mary Gleeson (25) with 37 points and Marie Hannon Healy (14) with 34 points.

Ennis
The Cahercalla Cup was played for at Ennis on Sunday and the winner was Martin Daly with 65 nett. He had two strokes to spare over Roy Duggan with Joe Carmody in third spot on 68, Jerry Keohane won the gross with 76, while the category winners were TJ Scanlan junior with 69, Andrew Cregan with 68 and Gerard Hannon with 68.

In the Friday open singles, the winner was William Delaney with 42 points from John Lillis with 42 and John Finn with 40. TJ Scanlan won the gross with 31 points.

Woodstock
Ramona Gleeson was the winner of the president’s (James Meade) prize to the ladies at Woodstock with 35 points. Anne Marie Russell was second with 33 followed by Maura Umlawski on 33 and Mairéad Carroll on 33. Mary Sadlier won the gross, while the nines were won by Kathleen Mcenery and Áine Burke. Kathleen McMahon was the winner of the beginners’ nine-hole competition.

The winners of the 14-hole mixed competition were Brian J Aherne, Patsy Nugent and Rory Callinan.
In the club qualifier for the Holmpartick Cup (NCBI), the winners were Michael Reen (6) and Mike Kelly (13) with 46 points. They will represent the club in Dromoland on July 25.

Festival of Golf at East Clare

East Clare Golf Club will hold a festival of golf from Monday to June 22 inclusive.

The festival will kick off on Monday with The Relations cup, a fourball betterball Stableford competition. Any combination will be allowed as long as the pair are related to each other.

On Tuesday, there will be a seniors’ (over 55) fourball when there will be a ladies’ and men’s competition. There will be a three-person scramble on Wednesday followed by a singles Stableford competition on Thursday. The festival will conclude on Friday with a fourball betterball with a nine-hole mixed scramble. The presentation of the week’s prizes will take place on the Friday night when there will be a barbecue.

Details of the festival were revealed recently by club captains, Kevin Mannion and Catherine Minogue.
In the men’s singles competition at the weekend, Martin Crotty (20) was the winner with 45 points from Kevin Wallis (12) with 39 points and Damian Carroll (16) with 37 points.

In the men’s seniors, the winners were Brendan Moloney, Liam Skelly and Frank Cox from Nick Ryan, Eamon Long and John Fleming with third place filled by John Stack, Pat Walsh and Michael Quigney.
In the ladies’ singles, Ina Reddan was the winner with 41 points from Mary Rodgers on 38 and Siobhán Shanahan on 37.

The ladies’ open day rumble winners were Brigid Minogue, Sue Casey and Kathleen O’Brien. Jim Greene, Helen Downey and Kevin Grimes won Friday’s scramble from Ger Hogan, Hilda McHugh and Tom Larkin.

This weekend there will be an 18-hole stroke competition for men and an 18-hole Stableford competition for ladies.

Kilkee
The winner of the club singles at Kilkee on Saturday was Pat Micks (17) with 41 points from Fachtna O’Driscoll (20) with 36 points and Len Ownes (17) with 36 points.

In a similar competition on Sunday, Philip Smyth (27) won with 36 points from Liam Browne (16) with a similar score. Jim Leyden (15) was third with 35 points.

Spanish Point

The winner of the captain’s (Noel Mc Mahon) prize to the ladies at Spanish Point was Helen O’Sullivan (36) with 34 points. Geraldine Reddan (24) won last week’s stroke competition with a net score of 67 from Val Shannon (8) on a score of 70 nett. The Nozomi open day will take place on Monday.

Last week’s bad weather affected the entries to some of the club’s open days but over 20 played in the Tuesday Senior Open and John O’Brien (14), with a score of 35 points, was the winner. The second golfer of the year singles was played on Saturday and Sunday last and was in stroke play format. From a big entry, Brendan McCarthy (11) played very well to shoot 59 nett (par 68) and win from Joe O’Rourke (13) 63 nett, Liam Burke (19) 64 nett and Seamus McMahon (14) 65 nett. The club’s mixed foursomes team are in action on Saturday when they meet Kilkee at 10.30am in Dromoland. The senior open for male and female golfers continues on Tuesdays and there is an open each Friday.

Portumna
The play-off in the President’s (Mike Carty) prize will take place on this Sunday. Those involved must sign in 1pm for a shotgun start at 2pm.

There will be a men’s 18 singles on Sunday with a shotgun start at 9am. the first 80 names on the time sheet will be allocated a tee time at 9am.

In the president’s prize, the leading qualifiers are Dan Hogan (11) 41 points, Philip Madden (21) 41 points, Martin Quinn (20) 41 points, John Hynes (20) 40 points, Mike Fallon (19) 40 points, Adrian Egan (10) 39 points, Suzanne Corcoran (3) 39 points, Graham Carty (14) 39 points, Frank Fallon (17) 39 points, Mabel Conroy (25) 38 points, Frank Kilkenny (10) 39 points, Michael Kennedy (13) 39 points, Carmel Cunningham (15) 36 points and Ian Davis (9) 39 points.

Audrey McGrath and Mary McElroy won the Australian Spoons competition recently with 44 points.
Open week starts on Saturday, June 23 and runs until to Sunday, July 1. The first weekend is a Gents’ Open fourball betterball Stableford and the ladies have a fourball. Timesheets will operate for all events.

In the seniors’ competition on Wednesday the winner was Henry Tarpey (19) with 48 points from Conor Bartley, Tipperary, (13) 39 points PJ Leahy ,Tipperary, (18) with 39 points and Sean Hogan (18) with 38 points.

Ena Morans ladies captain’s prize is postponed to Saturday, September 1.

Shannon Chamber Annual Golf Classic

Over 30 teams have already signed up to play in Shannon Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic, which takes place at Shannon on Thursday, June 21

Shannon Chamber’s chief executive, Helen Downes, is delighted at the level of support the Chamber has received.

Clarecastle

Niall McMahon was the winner of Clarecastle society’s recent outing at Ennis. Ger Shanahan was second with Gus Considine, third. The nines were won by John Casey and John McGrath. J Kelly was the winner of the guests section and Greg Fogarty the winner of the category prize. The next outing is to Portumna this Saturday and the first tee has been reserved from 8.53am to 9.53am. Members and guests intending to play should text 086 3246015 with their preferred tee time.

A draw for playing partners will be made on Friday afternoon and members and guests will receive, by text, their tee time and playing partners names on Friday evening.

Éire Óg

A total of 44 teams played in the Ger O’Meara memorial team event hosted by Éire Óg GAA at Ennis last Saturday.

The winners with 101 points were Niall Heaney, Stephen Guilfoyle, Cillian Duggan and Mick Duffy with 101 points. They had two to spare from Bernard Hanrahan, Colin Higgins, Sam Doyle and Niall McMahon with third spot filled by Joe Carmody, Michael butler, Jason Woods and Jim Horgan on 95 points. They were followed on 94 points by Fergus Blake, PJ O’Neill, Philip Brigdale and Ger Shanahan with fifth spot filled by John Nevin, Darren Kearse, Ollie O’Loughlin and Brendan Nevin who also scored 94 points. Joe Carmody won the prize for nearest the pin.

The presentation of prizes took place at a social evening in the Éire Óg clubhouse where Sean O’Meara presented the cup commemorating his late father Ger to the winning team.

Clare Teachers

The Clare Teachers captain’s (Fintan McEvoy) prize will be played for at Ennis on Monday when the tee will be available from 4pm. The presentation of prizes will follow with the annual general meeting of the society set for 9pm.

Pitch and putt

At the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday last, Kenneth Kerin was the overall winner of the Dormer memorial competition. This win marked his third success in succession in the event.

The seniors section was won by Marty Fawl, while Niall Seery won the intermediate section and Gareth Kerin captured the junior honours.
