Shannon gardaí investigate fatal collision

Gardaí in Shannon are still trying to establish the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision which occurred on the N18 at the Hurler’s Cross last Saturday morning, claiming the life of a 36-year-old Limerick woman.
Aileen O’Brien of Beverly Close, Raheen and formerly of Pallaskenry died after her car struck a tree at approximately 5am on Saturday morning, while she was travelling to work at Servisair in Shannon.
Ms O’Brien was the sole occupant of the car involved in the collision on the northbound carriageway of the N18. She was pronounced dead at scene.
Superintendent Peter Duff of the Ennis Garda District said gardaí in Shannon are still looking for witnesses who may have seen the incident occur. “She was travelling to work in Shannon on Saturday morning where she was on an early shift. It’s just a tragic accident. There doesn’t seem to have been anyone else involved.”
He added that reports that Ms O’Brien may have swerved to avoid an animal was “conjecture”.
“We don’t have any witnesses who saw the incident happen. There was nothing on the road to indicate skidding or anything like that, it’s speculation that’s all that is,” he said.
The Superintendent added that the driving conditions were quite good on the morning. “The road might have been damp and it was bright out,” he said. A full technical examination took place and the deceased was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital for a postmortem.
Ms O’Brien is survived by her husband, Wayne; parents, Stephen and Margaret; brother, Denis and sister, Ciara. Her requiem mass was held on Wednesday in St Mary’s Church, Pallaskenry and burial took place afterwards in Kilcornan Cemetery.
