Shannon and Woodstock chase national honours

Woodstock and Shannon are chasing All-Ireland honours this week. Shannon are in Ardee in Louth for the ladies’ intermediate final. They play Clontarf in the quarter-final, with a place in the semi-final against Mullingar awaiting the winners.
Meanwhile, Woodstock are in Castlerock in Antrim for the Pierce Purcell final.
Portumna ladies are also defending their title as All-Ireland Minor Cup holders at Ardee this Thursday at 11.30am and if they get through, they will play the final on Friday.

Lahinch
Patricia Ramsey was the winner of the ladies’ singles Stableford competition at Lahinch last Monday with 30 points.
In Saturday’s men’s monthly medal, Kevin Glynn (9) was the winner with 75 nett from Walter O’Brien (12) with 76 and Jimmy Condon (11) with 77 nett.
The men’s and ladies’ open singles Stableford competition continues on this Thursday.

Ennis
In the NBCRI fourball at Ennis, Eamonn Kelly and Charlie McEnery were the winners with 44 points from Paschal Phelan and Noel Whelan, who scored 40 points.
In the Friday open singles, Fergal O’Neill was the winner with 39 points from Tony Kinnevane on 38, Robert Cullen on 37 and Victory Coote, who also scored 37 points. Jason Woods won the gross with 30 points.
The ladies’ masters competition was won by Phil Butler with 73 nett from Suzanne Deane on 75.
In the weekly singles, Bridie Keane won with 37 points from Aideen Considine on 35.
In the ladies’ seniors outing, the winners were Claire Ruane, Mary Colton, Betty O’Riordan and Mary McMahon with 51 from Bernie Brooks, Mary Woulfe and Nuala Guinan with 57.

Woodstock

The winner of the Wednesday open singles at Woodstock last Wednesday was Michael Reen (7) with 37 points from Francis Neylon (13) with 36 points.
In the club singles, Kieran Dromey (8) was the winner with 39 points from Thomas Dormer (9) with 37 points. 

East Clare
Brian Lenihan (12) won the men’s singles at East Clare with 38 points from Peter O’Flanagan (15) with 38 points. In third place with 36 points was Joe Barriscale (13).
In the ladies’ singles, Leslie O’Glynn (14) was the winner with 39 points from Sue Casey (25) with 37 points and Mairéad Twomey (17) with 35 points.
In the men’s seniors the winners were John Farrrell, Kevin Mannion and Mike Gough from Jackie McHugh, Richard Keating and Chris Davis, with third spot filled by Willie Roche, Martin Kelly and Michael Drew.
In the ladies’ seniors, Marie A Kelly, Bernie Bohan and Mary Bugler were the winners from Hilda McHugh, Mary Hogan and Barbara Lynch.
In the Friday scramble, Derek Kenny, Noreen Doyle, Chris Davis and Brian McMahon won from Brendan Moloney, Marie A Kelly and Phil Burke, with third spot filled by Bernie Bohan, Liam Skelly and Jim Greene.
Next weekend, both men’s and ladies clubs have an 18-hole singles.

Shannon
The Wednesday open singles at Shannon saw Keith Buckley capture the honours with 39 points. Keith covered the front nine in one over, highlighted by a birdie at the third for 21 points. A steady back nine of 18 points, achieved in worsening conditions, was sufficient for victory by one from Ed Hickey, who was around in one under par. Ed recorded four birdies at the second, seventh, ninth and 10th holes. In third place was Greg O’Connor with 37 points while the gross was captured by Damian Casey with 32 points.
The weekend men’s competition was the special voucher when the first three, Kieran Considine, Paddy O’Rourke and Denis O’Gorman all returned 43 points. Kieran certainly did not harbour thoughts of victory when he turned with 19 points but a level back nine for 24 points got him home by a short head. Highlight of his back nine were birdies at 13 and 14. Paddy O’Rourke had to be content with the runner-up spot after nines of 22 and 21, highlighted by a birdie at the 16th. In third place was Denis O’Gorman with nines of 24 and 19, highlighted by birdies on his opening nine at the first and fifth. The gross was won by Pádraig Cahillane, who was around in two under. Pádraig’s only concession to par came at the third but was offset by birdies at the sixth, 14th and 18th. In fourth place was Michael Deasy with 42 points, just relegating Noel O’Loughlin into fifth place courtesy of a better back nine.
The back nine was required to separate the top three in the Ladies Rineanna Plate with Jean Wason, Mary Carroll and Jean Murphy Wright all returning 33 points.
There will be a men’s singles competition this weekend while the competition on Sunday will be an open mixed foursomes. There will be a ladies’ intermediate team fundraiser on Tuesday.

Kilrush
In the John McNamara memorial scramble at Kilrush, the winners were Dolores Reidy, Murt Collins and Tom Coffey from Una Doyle, John Heddigan, Noel Enright and Tom Prendeville, with third spot filled by Marian Roche, John Robinson and Jim Young Senior.
In last Thursday’s ladies’ singles competition, the winner was Mary Bolton (22) with 40 points from Miriam Saunders (26) with 39 points. In third spot was Anne Brennan (10) with 38 points while the category winners were Anne Coen (17) with 37 points, Margaret Donnelly (20) with 38 points and Margaret Clune (33) with 36 points.
In the Moyasta Coffey open singles on Sunday, the winner with 38 points was Pat Brennan (8) from Finbarr McMahon (15) with 36 points and Brian Scanlan (11) with a similar tally.
This Sunday, the club will host the St Gobain men’s open singles Stableford competition.
The winter league is starting on October 9 for four weeks and teams can be entered on entry the sheet on the club noticeboard.

Gort
Tony Kenny was the winner of the men’s singles competition at Gort at the weekend with 37 points from Laurence O’Loughlin on 35 and David McAllen with a similar score. Jason McLynn won the gross with 30 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by John O’Dwyer (Woodstock) with 39 points from Brendan Coyne (Woodstock) with 36 points and Sean Hanbury with 34 points.
There will be a singles competition this weekend as well as a ladies’ 18-hole singles Stableford competition.

Portumna
Eddie Maloney (18) was the winner of the singles competition at Portumna at the weekend with 39 points from Shane Duffy (19) with 35 points and Francis McClearn (14) with 34 points. JP McLoughlin (2) won the gross with 29 points while the winner of the seniors’ section was Brendan Madden (17) with 33 points.
In the Connacht Shield, Portumna beat Ballinasloe last week and have qualified to play Ballina. They are captained by Martin Kennedy. 
Two teams are to qualify each month, as well as the top visiting team, if not in the top two places.
Portumna, managed by Carmel Cunningham, are defending the All-Ireland minor ladies’ title at Ardee this weekend.

Dromoland
Ronan Mullane was the winner of the singles Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend with 39 points. Sean Burns was second with 38 while Sean Shanahan won the junior section with 41 points.
In the ladies’ bumper medal stroke competition, Maeve McMahon was the winner from Mairéad Bergin and Mary Arthur.
The president’s (Tim Delaney) prize to the ladies will be the competition this Saturday.
Entries are now been taken for the member’s senior competition.

Clare Teachers
John McNeilis was the winner of the Clare Teachers Society outing at Woodstock on Saturday with 42 points. He had 10 to spare from Jim McMahon on 32 and Michael Kilmartin on 31. The category winners were John Doyle with 31 points, Seamus Frehill with 29 and Mary Glynn with 28 while the nines were won by Joan Murphy with 19 and Áine Burke with 17.
The society’s next outing will be to Portumna on Saturday, October 22.

Cranny-Coolmeen
The Cranny-Coolmeen president’s (Ciaran Browne) prize was played for at Shannon recently when the winner was Michael Meaney with 41 points from Mary McNamara on 39 and Des Murphy on 34.
In category one, Oliver McNamara won with 29 points from Gerry Bredin on 28 and Tom Coffey on 28. Category two was won by Agnes Shannon with 34 points from PJ Hehir on 31 and John McNeilis, while category three was won by Francis Kelly with 30 points from Christina Daly on 32 and Pat Shannon on 32.
The visitor’s prize was won by Gerard Broderick with 35 points while Eamonn Ralph won the long drive, with Michael Donnelly winning the prize for nearest the pin.

Éire Óg
Éire Óg Golf Society will have an outing this Sunday to the Castle Course at Lahinch, where the tee will be available from 9 to 10am.

Pitch and Putt
Gareth Kerin was the winner of the Stableford competition at the Clare Road venue on Sunday from Gabriel Kerin.
There will be a club competition this Sunday.
