Shannon and Rynne win Lions Club 10km

KILNABOY’S Michael Shannon and Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare won the Lions Club, Shannon 10km road race and fun walk last weekend. The event had an entry of almost 120 competitors.
In the first 1km, two athletes made an early break, Michael Shannon, Kilnaboy and Dermot Kearns, West Limerick, going through in 3.06. Jarlath Donnellan, Shannon, was leading the next chasing group, along with James Kenny, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare; John Hannon, Olympic Harriers and Stephan Teeling Lynch, Shannon.
Michael Shannon took over at the front and pushed ahead at the 3km point in 9.44. Dermot Kearns was 20 seconds off the leader with James Kenny and John Hannon working well together over the next two kilometres.
Michael Shannon went through the 5km mark in 16.16 and over the second half of the race he really drove on and came home a very comfortable winner in 32.53, with Dermot Kearns two minutes behind in 34.54 and a fine run by John Hannon to take third place in 36.21.
They were followed by the leading master O-40, James Kenny (36.31), who had run 20 miles on Friday and is on course for a very good performance in the Dublin City Marathon in October. Karl Fitzmaurice, Shannon, who finished seventh overall, was the top junior athlete in 39.45.
The ladies’ race attracted some very good athletes and from the start Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, set a very lively pace. Lorna O’Neill, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare; Loretta Duggan, St Mary’s and Lorraine Carr, Shannon, were all settling in well in the big field but up front at the 3km mark, Sharon Rynne was starting to open up a good lead on Loretto Duggan, with Lorna O’Neill moving ever so closely to the second athlete at the 5km mark.
Sharon Rynne made light work of the very warm conditions to run a very fast time and she crossed the finish line in ninth place overall with a time of 40.47, two minutes ahead of Loretto Duggan in 42.27. There was a fine race from Lorna O’Neill to take third in 43.59, with Verena Tarpey, Limerick, the leading master lady O-35 in 45.04 and a great run by Rachel McGrath, Shannon, to take the junior ladies in 49.48.
