Scully and Rynne win in Shannon


Almost 100 competitors took part in the Last Lap 10km and 5km run, which was held in wet conditions around the roads of Shannon Town Centre.
Three athletes made an early break, Nenagh’s Garry Scully, James McIntyre and James Liddane, Olympic Harriers, and they went through the 1km mark in 3.10.
Karl Fitzmaurice, Shannon, led the next chasing group, along with Thomas Walsh, Olympic Harriers; Jason McIntyre, Shannon; Paul Horan, Newmarket-on-Fergus and James Sexton, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare.
Scully took over at the front and pushed ahead at the 3km point in 9.44. Liddane and McIntyre were 20 seconds off the leader, with Thomas Walsh in fourth place.
Scully went through the 5km mark in 16.16 and over the second half of the race he drove on and extended the lead, coming home a very comfortable winner in 32.37. James McIntyre was two minutes behind in 34.34, closely followed by James Liddane in third place in 34.45. He was followed by the leading master O-40 Thomas Walsh in 37.22. The leading junior was Karl Fitzmaurice, Shannon (39.08) with James Sexton (O-55) sixth in 40.08.
The ladies race attracted some very good athletes and from the start, Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, set a very lively pace. Orla Mooney and Aideen Shinners, both Shannon, settled in well but up front at the 3km mark, Rynne opened up a good lead. She went through the 5km in 20.02 and crossed the finish line in ninth place overall in a time of 40.30, five minutes ahead of Orla Mooney (45.18), with Aideen Shinners third in 46.16.
