Scariff 27 Bantry Bay 13

Scariff have moved to the top of the Munster Junior Division 3 League following this victory over Bantry Bay last Sunday.
The East Clare club had the best of the early exchanges and were 12-0 up after 15 minutes with tries from Rory Slattery and Conor McNamara, one of which was converted by James Kelly.
Bantry had a try before half-time when the score was 12-5 in Scariff’s favour.
The Cork side converted a penalty early in the second half to narrow the lead but Scariff responded with a drop-goal from Thomas Cronin.
A great break by James Kelly led to Scariff’s third try, which he converted.
A Bantry try kept the Cork side in the hunt but before the finish, James Kelly got in for another try, which ensured a bonus point win for Scariff.
The East Clare side are free this week and will resume league action on Sunday week with a home game against Dungarvan.

Crosshaven 39 St Senan’s 7

Following last week’s 20-13 home victory over Thurles, Senan’s hoped they could perform as well against a very strong Crosshaven side.
After an early setback, where the home side took the lead from a penalty and Chris Sloan left the field with a head injury, Senan’s took the game to Crosshaven, keeping them pinned deep in their own half.
Despite some very good play, they could not break through a well-disciplined defence and, after 19 minutes, Crosshaven broke out of defence and when awarded another penalty, they extended their lead to 6-0.
This rocked Senan’s and they seemed to lose their composure. The home side took advantage of this and ran in three tries in a 10-minute period, extending their lead to 25-0.
Senan’s tried to rebuild their attack but still could not make any breakthrough against the Crosshaven defence.
When the home side added a fourth try in the 39th minute, the game was put out of Senan’s reach by half-time.
Senan’s came out in the second half determined to make some inroads into the Crosshaven lead.
They managed to push the home side back deep into their own territory and had a number of opportunities to reduce the deficit but, as in the first half, the Crosshaven defence proved too strong. Seventeen minutes into the half Crosshaven broke upfield and drove over Senan’s try line to register their fifth try, extending their lead to 39-0.
In the 30th minute, Senan’s were rewarded for their hard work when Declan Coughlan ran in a consolation try, which Declan Collins converted. This was to be the last score of the game, leaving Crosshaven 39-7 victors.
With no match this coming weekend, Senan’s have an opportunity to reflect on this defeat and prepare themselves for their next match on November 7 against Old Christians in Jimmy Slattery Park.

Replacements: Gerard McNamara, Barry Murphy, Jake Egan, Ed Slattery, Mark Butler, Mike Lyons.

Mallow 25 Ennis 22

Ennis lost in Mallow in the league on Sunday, despite putting in their best performance of the campaign to date.
Mallow started the game with good pace and intensity but Ennis withstood the early onslaught and managed to gain a foothold in the game through their much-improved set-piece play.
With both the lineout and scrum working well, the Ennis backs consistently found gaps in the defensive line.
Time and again however, promising positions were compromised by indiscipline at the breakdown, which allowed Mallow to clear their lines far too easily. A couple of penalties gave Mallow a 6-0 lead after 25 minutes.
Bryan Murphy responded with a penalty when Mallow offended metres from their try line following a defence-splitting run by Andrew O’Neill. Ennis were punished for indiscipline again on the stroke of half-time and Mallow took a 9-3 lead into the break.
Within five minutes of the restart, Brian Dolan had given Ennis the lead with a smartly taken try.
Strong driving play by the forwards brought Ennis under the posts, allowing Brian Dolan to dart in for the try. Mallow responded with a try of their own within minutes after a strong run by their winger.
Shortly after, Mallow extended their lead further when they burrowed over from a ruck close to the line. At 19-10 down, Ennis were reeling and needed to respond quickly.
Following a turnover in the middle of the field, Dolan broke down the side of the ruck.
Good support from Joe Moloney led to a quickly recycled ball under the posts, which Enda Galvin capitalised on to touch down. Murphy converted and suddenly Ennis had momentum.
A clever kick in behind led to the Mallow full-back being caught in possession close to his line and penalised for holding on.
Expecting a kick at the posts, Mallow were caught napping by a quick tap-penalty and Niall Nevin had a free run to the line.
The conversion was missed but Ennis now held a 22-19 lead with 10 minutes to go. Ennis gathered the restart but subsequently failed to move the ball into the opposition half and duly suffered the consequences.
After a period of sustained pressure on the Ennis line, Mallow dropped a goal to level the match.
With two minutes remaining, Mallow got behind the Ennis defence and side entry at a ruck gave away a soft penalty, which was converted to finish the scoring and leave Mallow as victors.

Ennis: Andrew O’Neill, Dylan Tynan O’Mahoney, Niall Nevin, David Murphy, Saran Butler, Bryan Murphy, Brian Dolan, Conor Mahony, Thion van Rooyen, Damien Forde, Enda Galvin, Paddy Harding, Brian Farrell, Joe Moloney. Eric McInerney
Replacements: Steve Dunne for Harding; Noel Downes for D Murphy; Sean McCormack for Forde; Niall O’Loughlin for van Rooyen.

Horan out for November

Clonlara’s Marcus Horan has been ruled out of Ireland’s November international series squad with a broken hand.
The loosehead prop, who has been capped 66 times by Ireland, sustained the injury during gym work and is expected to be out for four to six weeks, meaning he will miss the matches against South Africa, Samoa, New Zealand and Argentina.
Munster had named Horan in their extended 28-man squad for the Magners League meeting with Benetton Treviso in Thomond Park but cried off.
