Scariff man ‘thrown’ from moving car

A SCARIFF man is in a critical condition in hospital in Limerick after an incident led to him being thrown from a moving car.
The local man, who is a publican, had attempted to confront a youth who had left his off-licence business without paying for cans of beer. The car in which the youth was in “sped off” while the publican was holding onto it.
Gardaí have confirmed the car drove up to 30 yards while the publican was still holding onto the vehicle. He was then “thrown to the ground”. His injuries have been described as “critical”.
Inspector John O’Sullivan of Killaloe Garda Station explained how the incident unfolded. “The incident occurred a little after 10pm. A youth went into an off-licence in Scariff to buy some cans. He was asked for identification and he left again, saying that he needed to go to the car to get a wallet. Shortly after that he returned and got the cans. He produced a passport. He did a runner with the cans and the owner of the premises followed him. The youth got into a car, which was parked outside in the car park. They sped off but the owner held onto the car and he was subsequently thrown onto the ground.”
The Scariff man, who is in his mid 50s, was removed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick and is believed to be in a critical condition.
The description of the youths was circulated and gardaí stopped and seized the car later on Tuesday evening in Ennis. Three youths aged between 17 and 18 were in the car.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone with further information to come forward. No arrests had been made at the time of going to print.
