Scariff go out to last minute goal

Carrig na bFearr, Cork 1-13   Scariff Community College 2-9

There was heartbreak for the senior hurlers from Scariff Community College on Wednesday at Kilfinnane in Limerick when they faced Carrig na bFearr from Cork in the semi-final of Corn Mhic Ruairi, Munster Colleges Senior C Hurling Championship.

In a tie in which there was little between the teams at any stage, the Clare side held the lead at the end of normal time.

A long range free from the Cork side wasn’t cleared and the rebound took a deflection on the way to the Scariff net.

The East Clare school, ten of whose starting line up will be available again next year, fought back strongly in the two minutes of injury time which followed but, despite their best efforts, they failed to get an equaliser and bowed out of the race.

Both of Scariff’s goals were scored by Martin Cunningham who was moved into the attack from midfield in the second half.

The teams went to the break on level terms at 0-6 each. The lead changed hands on a couple of occasions in the second half before the Cork side got the vital score in the final minute and will now go on to play Newport in the final.

Best for Scariff were Gavin McGrath, Cathal Madden, Eoin Quirke, Reuban Noyes, and goal scorer Cunningham.

Scariff Community College: Ricky Power (Scariff); Luke Patterson (Whitegate), Eanna Doyle (Bodyke), David McGrath (O’Callaghan’s Mills); Cathal Madden (Scariff), John Scanlan (Scariff), Diarmuid McNamara (Scariff); Martin Cunningham (Scariff), Niall Minogue (Scariff); Reuban Noyes (Whitegate), Eoin Quirke (Whitegate), Jack O’Brien (Broadford); Ian Murray (Bodyke), Colin Burke (Whitegate), Shane Corry (Scariff).
Subs: Paddy McNamara (Killanena) for Murray.
