Scariff Community College 2-5
Scoil Mhuire Agus Íde, Newcastle West 1-1
Scariff Community College were crowned Munster U-16½ camogie champions when they defeated Scoil Mhuire Agus Íde, Newcastle West, at Whitegate last weekend.
Scariff played with the aid of a very strong breeze in the first half and led at half-time on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-1.
The goal came when a long delivery from Keli Nugent was flicked to the net by Niamh Quirke. Points came from Trudy McGonigle and Róisín McNamara.
Scariff faced the strong wind and rain for the second half but signalled their determination with a point from Keli Nugent following a clever handpass from Ciara Doyle.
Nugent was subsequently sent off.
It was now with their backs to the wall that the Scariff girls’ superior sharpness and team spirit shone through. Their hard work was rewarded with a cracking goal from Róisín McNamara. Time and again Newcastle West were denied by a defiant Scariff defence, led superbly by goalkeeper, Lauren Solon.
Newcastle West scored a late goal but Scariff CC held out for a well-deserved win.
Credit is due to the Whitegate hurling and camogie clubs who, at very short notice, prepared the pitch after the Limerick venue was deemed unplayable on Friday evening.
