WEST Clare FC, who just missed out on promotion to the second division last season, got this season off to a great start when they captured the Third Division League Cup at the County Grounds in Doora on Sunday.

Ennis Town Rock B made a great start and they took the lead after just 11 minutes, when Cody Fitzgerald scored.

They had the better of matters for most of this half but a stubborn West Clare defence held firm, with goalkeeper Raymond McAuley pulling off a couple of great saves.

When they did go forward, the pact of the Russell brothers, Jason and Jamie, caused problems for the Ennis side.

Ten minutes from the break, they levelled when Jamie Russell rose highest to direct a powerful header to the corner of the Ennis Town Rock’s net. The sides went to the break at 1-1.

In a fairly evenly balanced second half, Jamie Russell made the decisive breakthrough to score what proved to be the winning goal.
