Ruan stay on top through summer downpour

Ruan 2-0

Tulla 1-4

DESPITE the torrential downpour on Friday evening, this Camogie LIT League clash between Tulla and Ruan got off to a lively, if slippery start. This was the first meeting of these clubs in competition this year and a certain amount of nervousness was evident in the first few minutes. Tulla settled into the game quicker and had Ruan’s defence under pressure. However, Ruan soon settled but despite having the majority of possession in the first half, they were guilty of some wides and following a defensive error, Tulla hit a goal to leave the score at 1-2 to 1-1 at the end of the half.

The second half continued in a similar manner with both sides fairly evenly matched. Ruan were again guilty of some missed chances from placed balls and play, whilst Tulla converted any frees awarded to them. Tulla’s defence stood up well to the ongoing attack from the Ruan forwards. In the remaining 10 minutes, Ruan started to capitalise on their possession, which saw them add 1-4 to their first-half score whilst Tulla added on three points.
Overall, despite the weather conditions, this was a very well-fought match played in a sporting manner on a well-maintained pitch. Tulla were very strong in defence and their goalie, Ashling McNamara, pulled off some great saves. They were also well served by Lisa Meehan, Aibheen Byrns, Áine Dinan, Ashling and Sinéad McNamara. Ruan’s hard-working defence was steady throughout the game and up front, Alice Casey, Rebecca Crowe, Eadoin Fitzgerald, Lauren O’Donoghue and Natasha Hynes always looked threatening.

Subs: Lydia Sheedy for Aoife McNamara.

Éire Óg Ennis 0-0

Eire Óg Nenagh 4-5

ÉIRE Óg Ennis faced their namesakes in Nenagh in Round 3 of the North Munster League on another wintry June evening when supporters were treated to a very entertaining match. The Clare side raced into a four-point lead within three minutes of the throw-in with a Shaunagh O’Brien point and an unstoppable goal from full-forward, Orla Devitt. The sides traded points with a pointed free from Nenagh’s Ciara McGrath and a further point from Devitt. Katie Malone pulled off a fine save for the Ennis side with Aileen Duggan pointing the resultant 45’. Claire McMahon struck for a goal from a next to impossible angle to further the visitors lead. The next seven minutes belonged to the home side with McGrath sending over three fine points to narrow the margin to just three. A pointed 45’ from McMahon, however, sparked off a scoring frenzy for the Ennis side with Devitt notching up 2-1, Shauna Keane a point and deep into injury time, two cracking goals from Shaunagh O’Brien to give them a 6-5 to 0-5 lead at the break.
Éire Óg Ennis had 1-1 on the board within three minutes of the restart with an excellent Shauna Keane point opening the scoring followed by a goal from Devitt. McGrath sent a great shot to the net for the Tipp side in the 36th minute with McMahon replying with a point in the 37th minute. The Nenagh girls upped their game and threw all they had at the Ennis side for the next 15 minutes. They were rewarded with three goals, two from the stick of McGrath and one from Gemma Morris. The Ennis side battled back and two further goals from Devitt along with two points from McMahon secured a well-earned victory for them. Killanena/Whitegate  5-7

Feenagh/Kilmeady 0-2

EAST Clare amalgamation, Killanena-Whitegate scored a second successive Divison 2 victory this week. In Round 1, they accounted for Scariff/Ogonnelloe before travelling on Monday night to take on the fancied Feenagh/Kilmeedy from Limerick who had defeated Wolfe Tones in Round 1.
Heavy pre-match rain had softened the Feenagh pitch but had little effect on the game as the two teams battled hard in the opening half for supremacy. Killanena/Whitegate had the first score after five minutes from Lisa Donoghue as the visitors set the tone with an aggressive style of play. During the opening half, Feenagh/Kilmeedy managed only one score from a free as Anne McNamara in the Killanena/Whitegate goal pulled off three important saves. They added three more first-half points courtesy of Emma Quirke, and Lisa Donoghue as the winners’ half-back line of Carol Minogue, Gráinne McNamara and Lorraine Canny controlled the game. The winners held a narrow 0-4 to 0-1 half-time advantage.
The lack of scores in the first half was not repeated in the second half as the visitors to the Limerick venue dominated with Lisa Donoghue and Pauline McNamara combining well as McNamara set up Donoghue for three second-half goals as Triona Kelly added two more. The home side managed only one second-half score as Ciara McNamara and Orla Burke also worked hard to seal success. Killanena/Whitegate host Lorrha in Round 3 this coming weekend.

Killanena-Whitegate:
Anne McNamara, Aoife Collins, Ciara Mulvihill, Aoife Conlon, Carol Minogue, Gráinne McNamara, Lorraine Canny, Ciara McNamara, Rachel Bleach, Amy McArthur, Pauline McNamara (0-1), Orla Madden, Lisa Donoghue (3-3), Emma Quirke (0-2), Triona Kelly (2-1).
