Roche-Johnson and Hyland win in Kilkishen

The fourth annual East Clare 10k road and 10k fun walk and cycle was held in Kilkishen on Saturday with a large number of competitors taking part in all three.
Clare senior hurling captain Pat Donnellan from the host club was the official race starter and all proceeds from the event went to Irish Cancer Society and Church of Ireland Restoration fund.
Tracy Roche-Johnson (Bilboa) captured the ladies’ title on a sprint finish from Catherine Conway (Mayo) with Helen Corbett (Galway City Harriers), third.
Fintan Hyland (Galway City Harriers), won the senior mens in 32.47 from James McIntyre (BMOH), and Colm Turner (Limerick).
Willie Devitt (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) and Mike Cunningham (Bilboa) set a very fast pace going through the 1k mark in 3.16. They were closely followed by a group of five athletes that included Colm Turner (Limerick), Fintan Hyland (Galway City Harriers), TJ McHugh (Mayo), Keith Lynch, James McIntyre (both BMOH).
Fintan Hyland made a decisive move towards the front before the 3k mark and split this field with James McIntyre now working hard alongside Colm Turner as our leaders went through the half waypoint in 16.10.
Fintan Hyland went through the 8k mark in 26.02 and over the final 2k the gap was getting wider and he came home a very comfortable winner in 32.47. There was a great contest for the second spot and James McIntyre came through in 33.42.
A fine run by Mike Cunningham who finished 6th in 34.44 saw him finish as the leading master O-40 with Liam Butler (Dundrum Tipperary) taking the O-50s in 41.25.
The ladies race attracted some very good athletes and from the start Tracy Roche-Johnson (Dooneen AC) Catherine Conway (Mayo), Helen Corbett (Galway City Harriers) and local athlete Cushla Brid Hehir (Ennis Track) all set a very lively pace
Carmel McDomhnaill (West Limerick) and Antoinette Coleman (Ind) were starting to come through but at the 3k mark Tracy Roche-Johnson and Catherine Conway were starting to open up a good lead on the chasing pack and at the 5k mark Cushla Brid Hehir was back in fourth spot.
Tracy Roche-Johnson made a big move in Kilkishen village and crossed the finish line in 13th place overall in a time of 38.09 just six seconds ahead of Catherine Conway.
