THE West Clare Family Resource Centre is to host an information workshop called Are You Minding Yourself? which will focus on mental health for older people and their families.
The workshop will be held on Monday, November 7 from 11.30am in the Youth Centre, Fahy’s Road, Kilrush. The main purpose of the workshop is to encourage a positive approach to ageing and being older by promoting a healthy attitude towards mental health and other issues.
In these tough economic times people need to look after themselves and their families, so it is vital that the community responds to the stress people are facing today.
The workshop will be facilitated by Johanna Treacy, who has expertise in the areas of mental health, personal and community development. She will work with people to look at the various aspects of mental health that older people may have concerns with.
A speaker from SHINE, which is a national organisation dedicated to upholding the rights and addressing the needs of all those affected by mental ill health, will also attend the workshop.
The organisation does this through the promotion and provision of services, as well as working to ensure the continual enhancement of the quality of life of the people it serves. Brochures and information on the variety of supports available on mental health in the West Clare area will be provided at the workshop.
The event is free of charge and everybody is welcome to attend. The atmosphere will be friendly and informal and light refreshments will be served.
If transport is required from rural areas, anybody interested should contact the West Clare Family Resource Centre on 065 9062587 by Wednesday, November 2 to book a seat.
The West Clare Family Resource Centre through the Supports and Services to Older People project is committed to improving the quality of life for older people in West Clare.
The project provides information on education, social and recreational opportunities that are available to older people in their local communities. It also provides vital encouragement and supports to enable people to make use of these facilities.
Currently, the project facilitates weekly ‘drop in and chat’ coffee mornings at its centre in Kilrush, as well as weekly group meetings in Cooraclare, Carrigaholt, Doonbeg and Kilkee. Other activities the project organise include regular Sunday tea dances, swimming, arts and crafts, information and awareness-raising events.
