Kilmihil 3-12
Kilmurry-Ibrickane 1-5
ALTHOUGH the first half was competitive, Kilmihil established complete control thereafter and easily secured their place in the 2012 intermediate county football final.
A return of 2-5 from Paul Reidy was pivotal to Kilmihil’s win against a Kilmurry team that didn’t pose any serious attacking threat.
Reidy’s seventh-minute goal, set up by a Martin O’Leary pass, helped Kilmihil into a 1-3 to 0-3 half-time lead. That goal put the winners 1-2 to 0-0 up as Reidy from a free and O’Leary had already pointed.
As comprehensive as Kilmihil’s 13-point winning margin was, they will not reflect kindly on kicking just a single point in the remaining 23 minutes after Reidy’s first goal. Timmy Ryan scored it, two minutes before half-time. In the interim, John McNamara from a free, Mark Moloney following a quick Odran O’Dwyer 45’ and Seamus Lynch scored for Kilmurry.
Kilmihil kicked seven first-half wides and also missed some scoreable frees with O’Leary and Reidy both off target in this respect. However, both scored some early second-half points as did Timmy Ryan to help Kilmihil into a 1-8 to 0-3 lead.
Fourteen minutes from time, Reidy was fouled for a penalty and when he buried it, Kilmihil were home and hosed. They now led 2-8 to 0-4 with Seamus Lynch having scored Kilmurry’s opening second-half point.
Colm Donnellan, picked at corner-forward but largely operating as a third midfielder, scored Kilmurry’s goal nine minutes from time, following a high delivery from Lynch. If they are to win the intermediate final, Kilmihil will have to work on dealing more capably with high balls into the square than they did with that one.
The goal was almost immediately cancelled out, however, when Colm Callinan netted at the opposite end to put the winners into a 3-9 to 1-4 lead. Reidy twice from play and substitute Eoin Downes completed the scoring for David O’Brien’s team.
Reidy’s scoring return did the most damage, while Stan Lineen, Jack Browne, Timmy Ryan, their hardest working forward Mark Coughlan, Martin O’Leary and Colm Callinan all played well for Kilmihil.
John McNamara and Mark Moloney were best for Kilmurry.
