Pyne wins Greg Young Memorial Trophy at Lahinch

NOEL Pyne won the Greg Young Memorial Trophy at Lahinch at the weekend when he had one shot to spare over Michael Burns. The Ennis man returned a score of 148 for the competition, which took place on the Castle Course on Friday and the Championship Course on Saturday. In third place was Ger Vaughan on 153.
In the nett category, the winner was Declan Broughan with 135, from Gerry O’Mahony on a similar score with Ronan Murphy one stroke back in third spot.
John McDonnell won the net on Friday with 66, while Pat Dunne won this category on Saturday.
In the gross section on Friday, Ger O’Shea was the winner with 70, while Rupert Staunton won this category on Saturday on 76.
Jerry Keohane won the over 60s’ section with 137, while Joe Carney won the over 70s with 140.
In the men’s singles Stableford competition on Saturday, the winner was John Shannon (21) with 46 points from Bert Gleeson (16) with a similar score. John Skerritt junior (10) was third with 44 points.
In the ladies’ champagne scramble on Saturday on the Castle Course, the winners were Olivia Lucas (7), Anne Vaughan (12), Barbara McEvoy (15) and Máire Hanrahan (23) with 99 points.
The men’s fourball Stableford competition on the Castle Course on Sunday was won by Kieran (21) and Sean Shanahan (6) with 40 points.

Portumna
SUNDAY’S 18-hole Stableford competition at Portumna was won by Basil Kennedy (9) with 42 points, from Jamie Conboy (6) with 41 points and Mike Keyes (11) with 40 points. The gross was won by Pat Quinlan (7) with 33 points, while the seniors section as won by Joe Austin (11) with 37 points.
In the open Monday competition, the winner was Tony Harte (19) 36 points, from John Harte (8) with a similar score and Joe Bermingham (16) from Royal Tara who also scored 36 points. The gross was won by George Christie (9) Dunmurray Springs Golf Club with  25 points.
In the ladies’ section, the winner was Lillian Austin (28) 39 points, from Birgit Dagenhardt (22) 37 points and Kathleen Lynch (16) with 37 points. The gross was won by Regina Power (7) with 22 points.

Woodstock
IN the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend, the winner was Tony Nugent with 43 points from Keith Farr with a similar score.
In the weekly ladies’ singles competition, the winner was Aideen Walsh with 38 points.
The winners of the nine-hole mixed scramble were Robbie Dormer Tom Kenneally and Patsy Nugent with 22.9 from Jim Carmody, Martin White and Ramona Gleeson with 24.
Last week’s mixed scramble was won by Liz Dinan, John Dormer and Frank McEnery. The final night of the mixed scramble for this season will be on Thursday, September 27 from 5.30pm.
In the ladies’ masters final last Sunday, the winner was Mary Gleeson from Mary Sadlier, Maura Umlawski, Una Patton and Teresa Sherlock.
The leading qualifier was Mairéad Carroll.
Others to compete were Áine Burke, Kathleen McEnery and Ramona Gleeson.

Next Sunday is Christmas hampers’ day with the draw at 10.45am sharp. The medal stroke play competition will be on Sunday week.

Ennis
ENNIS seniors played Birr in a fourball competition for the Birr-Ennis Shield on Thursday last at Ennis. Seventy Ennis members were joined by 30 from Birr with the eight best cards to count. Ennis won on a score of 388 points to 349.
The Ennis scorers were Eamonn Corry and Bill Leacy with 50 points, Patrick Murphy and Dick Burke with 50 points, Terry Hughes and Conor Murphy with 49 points, Sean O’Gorman and Michael Butler with 48 points, Frank Sheedy and Eamonn Murphy with 48 points, Pat McInerney and PJ Garry with 48 points, Jimmy McNamara and James Ball with 48 points, Peadar Cosgrove and Brian Warner with 47 points.
The first round of the Clare-Galway Winter League will be played at Ennis on Monday.
In the Friday open singles, the winner was Noel Whelan (Slievenamon) with 41 points, from Robert Pender on 40, Michael Hiney (Moate) on 38 and Conor McInerney on 38. James Carmody, Woodstock, won the gross with 29 points.
In the ladies’ section, Peggy Duggan was the winner with 32 points.
The ladies’ monthly medal was won by Ronan Nalty with 70 nett.

Gort
THE weekend singles at Gort was won by Kieran Blake (23) with 45 points from Andreas Edler (14) with 43 points, James C Rodgers (17) with 41 points. and Paddy Coghlan (17) with 41 points. The gross was won by Eamonn Morrissey (6) with 33 points. 
In the Monday open singles, Jerry Leahy (9) was the winner with 41 points from Joe Geoghegan (9) with 40 points.
There will be a men’s 18-hole singles stroke competition this weekend, while the weekly open will continue on Monday.
In the ladies’ section, the singles winner was Phil Mulkerrins (26) with 79 from Helen McCormick (20) with a similar score and Maureen Brennan (18) also with 76.
The ladies will have an 18-hole singles competition this week and a Hallowe’en Surprise running until Tuesday, October 23.

Dromoland
SEAN Shanahan, with 40 points, was the winner of the weekend competition at Dromoland from Jason O’Leary on 38 points. In the 18 and over handicap section, Hugh O’Neill was the winner with 32 points, while the junior winner was Tadhg Shanahan with 37 points.
This weekend’s competition is the single Stableford.
On Sunday last, the finals of the Claret Jug, senior matchplay and junior/student matchplay took place. In the Claret Jug final, Noel McMahon beat Brian Arthur. Kieran Newman beat John Collins in the senior matchplay final while, in the junior/student matchplay, Declan O’Leary beat Danny Mungovan.
The Ladies’ Bumper Medal took place on Sunday and the winner was Cora O’Toole (75) from Mary O’Donnell (79) and Maeve McMahon (79).

East Clare
IN the ladies’ seniors, Ina Reddan, Kathleen Reddan and Connie McKenna were the winners from Hilda McHugh, Noreen Ryan, Pat Williams and Mary Bugler.
This weekend, the men’s club will have their club championship, while the ladies will have an 18-hole Stableford competition.
East Clare had a very successful open day for seniors on Tuesday last when 120 played the course.
The winner was Willie Roche with 43 points from Sean Daly (Ennis) 41, Eamon Mulhall 41, Noel O’Herlihy (Rathbane) 40, Tony McNulty 39 and Mick Ryan 39.
The gross was won by Noel Pyne (Ennis) with 33 points.

Spanish Point
THE annual challenge with Ringenane Golf Club, Cork for the Hillery/Lynch Shield will be played this Saturday in mixed matchplay format. The visitors are the holders of the trophy and club captains, Noel McMahon and Nuala Kilroy, are looking forward to the local pairings playing to their best form to bring the trophy back to Spanish Point.
Last week, the Tuesday seniors open was won by Eamonn Murphy (10) with 35 points. In the 18-hole singles at the weekend, the winner was Ray Ward (14), 37 points from Patrick O’Boyle (18) 37 points.
The final golfer-of-the-year competition will take place on the weekend of September 29 and 30.

Kilrush
IN the seniors’ outing at Kilrush last week, the winners were John Robinson, TJ Lyons, Matt Fitzpatrick and Aeneas O’Connor with 60 points, from Sean Moran, Seamus O’Doherty, and  Brendan McNamara with 55 points. In third spot were Tom Coffey, Noel Cooney and Tom O’Dea with 54 points.
In the Beryl McNamara Memorial Ladies Singles on Thursday, the winner was Margaret Donnelly (20) with 69 from Mary McNamara (20) with 71 and Marian Brennan (21) with 71. Bernadette Eastham (12) won the gross with 87, while the nines were won by Maeve Murphy (27) 34 and Ailish Lorigan (16) 34, Ursula Lineen won the prize for nearest the pin.
The winners of the Friday mixed were Des Murphy, Pat Shannon and Geraldine Burke, from Pat Brennan, Kieran Lillis and Lucy Blake.
In the KGC mens singles on Sunday, the winner was Michael Hemmings with 35 points from Tom Coffey on a similar score.
The winter league will commence in October and entries are now being accepted.
The ESB Inaugural Men’s Open Singles Cup will take place this Sunday. The Marble Tech ladies’ singles will take place next Thursday 
September 27.

Clare Teachers

WOODSTOCK was the venue for a Clare Teachers’ Society outing on Saturday when the winner was Sean Daly with 40 points. He had three to spare from James Mewade with John O’Connor a further point back in third spot. The category winners were Donal Vaughan with 34, Jim McMahon with 34 and Berry O’Riordan with 23 points. The nines were won by Matt Power with 17 and Alan Dunne with 20 points.
The society’s next outing will be to Portumna on Saturday, October 13 when the tee will be available from 9.45am.

Sixmilebridge

SHANNON was the venue for the Sixmilebridge Society outing when members played for captain’s John Nihill, prize. The winner was Mike Purcell from Mike Ryan with Ed Crowe third and Jason Twomey in fourth spot. John Chaplin and Paudge Flannery won the nines, while Noel Flannery and Chaplin won nearest the pin and the long drive. The category winners were Noel Flannery and Alan Mulready.

Pitch and putt
GARATH Kerin was the overall winner at the Clare Road club on Sunday. In second place was Denis McElligott, while the gross was won by Kenneth Kerin.
The nett scramble was won by Kenneth and Garath Kerin and Kevin Wood.
The gross was won by Denis McElligott, Marty Fawl and Michael Kerin.
