A THIRTEEN-year-old Shannon schoolboy is set to follow in his brothers’ footsteps.
Next week, Patrick McDonagh, a student at St Patrick’s Comprehensive School, will travel as a member of the Irish team to box in Russia, thus emulating his brothers, William and Bernard.
Boxing out of the St Francis’ Club in Limerick, Patrick competes in the 39 kilo division.
Older brother William, who boxed out of the Ennis club some years ago, has recently returned to the ring after a two-year absence. William boxed for Ireland at welterweight and he is now boxing at heavyweight. He made his return at a tournament in the St Francis’ club recently when he scored a comprehensive victory over the current Irish champion, Darren Cruise, who hails from Mayo. William is preparing for the Munster Intermediate Championships which will take place in November.
Seventeen-year-old Bernard has also achieved success in the ring and he also represents St Francis’ Club.
They are sons of John and Kathleen. John and William plan to travel to Russia to support Patrick when he boxes for Ireland next week.
