Parteen scrape through intermediate battle with Feakle

Parteen  0-15   Feakle  0-14

Reduced to 14 men early in the second quarter when Colm Naughton picked up a second yellow card, Feakle still managed to put up a brave battle against a fancied Parteen side in this intermediate championship first-round game.

Indeed, the South East Clare side had to rely on an injury-time free from David Small to secure victory in a tie that ended in some controversy, which referee Flan O’Reilly is expected to detail in his report.
Feakle led by two points at the break, 0-8 to 0-6, having played with the aid of the breeze. Early in the second half, Parteen got back on terms.
They then hit the front but Feakle levelled and a draw looked likely as the game went into injury time. David Small then scored his ninth point of the afternoon to seal victory for the South East Clare outfit.

Corofin 1-14   Killanena  2-10

Corofin had to pull out all the stops before emerging from this first-round tie against Killanena with a one-point win at Tubber on Saturday. After a disappointing league campaign, Killanena stepped up considerably in form for this one. They welcomed back Mark Flaherty for his first game in almost a year following a cruciate knee injury. Normally a forward, he played in goals, taking over from the injured David Noone.
Corofin led by five points at half-time, 0-11 to 1-3, David McNamara scoring Killanena’s opening goal in the first 10 minutes. Killanena fought back to level in the third quarter before Corofin pulled four clear with time almost up.

Crusheen  3-9   Sixmilebridge  0-13

Goals proved important in this game played at Tulla on Sunday when Crusheen managed three, which helped them to a good victory over a Sixmilebridge side that was short a number of players.
Indeed, the absence of Sixmilebridge players, who are part of the Clare minor panel, is believed to be a cause of anger within the club and may well be the subject of a meeting between the club and Clare GAA officials. As it was, Sixmilebridge missed many chances, both from play and frees, which proved costly. Goals from Philip O’Donnell, after good work by Patrick O’Grady, and Dara O’Doherty helped the winners to lead 2-4 to 0-6 at the interval. Youen Horner scored their third goal shortly before the final whistle.

Newmarket fought back strongly in the second half when the big talking point was the disallowing of a Seanie Arthur goal with about 10 minutes remaining.
