Parades attract large turn-outs

THERE was a huge turn out of both floats and spectators at the various parades in West Clare over the bank holiday weekend. Along with the parade in Kilrush on St Patrick’s Day, a footing turf and peeling potatoes competition was held.

THERE was a huge turn out of both floats and spectators at the various parades in West Clare over the bank holiday weekend. Along with the parade in Kilrush on St Patrick’s Day, a footing turf and peeling potatoes competition was held.
Carrigaholt Nationa School won the schools’ section prize, with Shragh National School second and St Senan’s National School, Kilrush finishing third.
The open section of the parade was won by McKeon’s, Henry Street, Kilrush, with the Stella Maris, Kilkee runners up. Gerry O’Dea’s Vintage Group finished third in that section.
Kilrush RNLI won the club section with Kilrush Shamrocks second and the West Clare Cycle Club in third place. The business section winners were An Post with Crowley’s Garage second and Whelan’s Garage third.
The overall winners were An Post, with Carrigaholt National School winning the shield.
In the turf footing competition, the ladies team of Mary Flanagan and Breda Falsey won, while Lisa Crowe of the Haven Arms won the pub potato peeling competition. Maggie Clancy of the Percy French was second with Ann Ryan of Looney’s finishing third.
Kilkee also attracted a sizeable crowd and an array of very impressive floats, while Doonbeg staged its first St Patrick’s Day parade in half a century last Sunday.
